Understands and adheres to all laws pertaining to disclosure of student records (FERPA). Understands and adheres to the professional scope, standards, codes, rules and regulations of Professional Governing Bodies: Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) Association of Surgical Technology (AST) National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Teaching and Direct Instructional Activities: Prepares and delivers lectures in the classroom or online platform. Utilizes the Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas, for posting teaching material, assignments, and grades; organized and available to students. Leads and moderates classroom discussions. Facilitates online activities and communications. Administers and grades examinations and assignments. Responsible for directing, evaluating and reporting student progress toward course objectives. Reviews and updates course materials and/or books annually or as needed and makes recommendations to the Program Director/Program Coordinator. Course materials are prepared using evidence-based resources (textbooks, instructional aids, online resources, and materials) to meet the outlined course learning objectives. Teaching plans are organized and updated in accordance with the current Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology. Prepares and organizes course content to be accomplished in the allotted time for lecture/lab. Instruction provided to individual students and groups appropriate to the needs and requirements of activities being performed. Attends class on time and if unable to attend; ensures alternate method of course delivery is available for students, notifying Program or Clinical Director and Dean of absence. Able to deliver course content in a clear, concise manner that enhances student learning. Demonstrates varied methods of course content delivery and use of instructional aids. Provides adequate resources that enable students to successfully complete assignments. Content expert in subject matter. Promotes discussion among students as well as learning and individual initiative. Provides constructive feedback in a timely manner on tests and assignments. Provides fair grading of student course work. Utilizes best practices and evidence-based practice in the classroom, lab, simulation, and clinical setting to ensure positive and consistent learning experiences for students. Accepts and completes assigned tasks/duties related to the requirements to maintain program accreditation. Contributes to academic and clinical content for curriculum planning and development of student experience. Assists with recording/tracking student completion, placement and retention rates. Clinical Duties: Monitors and ensures proper documentation is entered into the online clinical documentation system to verify and validate students’ performance and that they are meeting clinical case requirements for graduation (Core Curriculum for Surgical Technology, AST). Orients self, students, clinical instructors and preceptors to program and clinical facility policies and procedures. Evaluates student performance in the lab, simulation, and clinical setting. Provides recommendations for budgeting and purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials to the Program Director/Program Coordinator and/or Dean. Performs continuous review of the effectiveness of the clinical sites and instruction of the clinical competencies. Required Education Graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency (CAAHEP/ABHES). Required Experience Three years of experience either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past five years. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Plan, organize, and prioritize job duties to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently, problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment and networked personal computers. Proficiency in or ability to become proficient in a variety of software, including but not limited to Office 365 apps. Skilled at communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and written, at all levels. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations needed to complete job tasks. Skilled at planning, organizing, and prioritizing job duties to meet deadlines. Maintaining interpersonal professional working relationships at all levels – students, peers, and Executives. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, students, staff, and parties outside of the college. Models professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance, and related. Required Licenses or Certifications Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA). (NBSTSA-preferred or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) credentials accepted). Possess a knowledge of the program’s curriculum and evaluation of student learning and performance. Preferred Education CST® and/or CSFA® through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Associate degree or higher in Surgical Technology.
