Overview SUMMARY: Maintains shipping operations and workflow by monitoring steps of production and process; monitoring shipping progress, personnel and resources; steward for safety regulations maintains reporting procedures and shift production summaries; ensures operation of equipment by calling for repairs and facilitating maintenance corrections to malfunctions within process; evaluates new equipment and techniques; schedules and assigns shipping personnel to accomplish plan; supervises and coordinates activities of employees engaged in shipping and receiving of products, components, and/or replacement parts and in verifying and keeping records on incoming and outgoing shipments and preparing items for shipment. Responsibilities Manage shipping and/or receiving personnel (hire, train, evaluate employee performance, and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action). Oversee incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments. Supervision of shift employees/shift supervisor - create and oversee an employee training schedule that emphasizes productivity, process knowledge and resource conservation. Review shipping notices, bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records to determine shipping priorities, work assignments, and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules, utilizing knowledge of shipping procedures, routes, and rates. Plan work schedules, assigns duties, and evaluates work for accuracy and conformance to policies. Work with management to establish and modify department operational methods and procedures. Ensure that goods are packaged and protected for shipping according to specifications. Determine space requirements and position of shipment in boxcars and trucks and lay out position of shipment. Determine routing and legal load limits of trucks, according to established schedules and weight limits of states. Inspect loading operations to ensure compliance with shipping specifications, and seal loaded boxcars and truck doors. Inspect material handling equipment for defects and notifies maintenance personnel or contacts outside service facility for repair. Maintain vehicle maintenance report. Direct movement of shipments from shipping and receiving platform to storage and work areas. Maintain reports, records, and documentation to reflect department activities. Compile records of unfilled orders. Assist in shipping and receiving activities as needed. Post weight and shipping charges. Analyze performance of existing shipping and receiving systems, evaluating and recommending new programs to improve distribution methods and implement cost reductions. Supervision of shift employees/shift supervisor - create and oversee an employee training schedule that emphasizes productivity, process knowledge and resource conservation. Fluency and utilization of Company computer programs - JD Edwards, Shop Floor, Time Force, etc. Monitor shift supervisor's input of Timekeeping and Payroll functions. Safety – conduct monthly safety meetings, safety contacts as required, administration and policing of Company PPE policy. Enforce safety policies and procedures (both in-house and regulatory) to decrease the potential for employee injuries on the job. Quality – assurance of quality product per ASTM and BMT specs. ISO – responsible for adherence to ISO program, conduct internal ISO audits as necessary. Administer and enforce Safety and Conduct Rules, determine and discipline infractions of the same per employee handbook and safety rules. Accomplishes warehouse staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures. Maintains staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees and develops personal growth opportunities. Manage Rail Picks/loading process to meet standards. Prepare shift report. Ensure efficient staging of trucks. Disposition material as required. Review and turn in cut-line reports. Review pick for accuracy. Minimum of 6 walk throughs per shift. Adhere to loading appointment schedule. Hold shift start up meetings. Review Load schedule prior to shift start. Requirements Strong interpersonal skills and leadership abilities. Must be able to complete necessary paperwork in a legible and thorough manner. Focused on safety. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Qualifications Associate degree or equivalent from technical school, or equivalent work experience. 1-2 years related experience and/or training. Basic computer skills in Microsoft (Excel and Word).
