Clinical Nurse Supervisor

Report directly to the Facility Administrator or Health Service Administrator for daily clinical operations within the medical department. Manage and supervise daily nursing and clinical activities. Supervise nursing and non-licensed health care providers in the performance of their duties and evaluate as prescribed by facility policy. Train new employees and prepare written performance appraisals. Listen to complaints and effectively resolve disputes or problems. Take corrective or disciplinary action as needed. Develop work schedules and approve leave requests for subordinates. Provide direct patient care as indicated within the scope of licensure. Apply appropriate nursing skills in the care and treatment of patients. Ensure adequate staffing at the facility and fill in during short staffing periods. Perform nursing duties as needed, including executing physician's orders, assisting in examinations, dispensing medications, treating emergencies, screening patients, and performing intakes. Conduct triage and physical assessments. Perform and direct emergency care and procedures as needed. Monitor inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. Provide guidance and monitor nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintain a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies. Utilize established policies and procedures in decision-making while exercising sound independent judgment. Regularly evaluate the provision of medical services to prevent the inappropriate use or duplication of those services. Maintain security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assist with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. Closely monitor all potential catastrophic illnesses. Audit pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed. Comply with all applicable pharmacy laws regarding controlled substances. Observe and record patient behavior. Inspect the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and ensure supplies are securely stored. Provide health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. Assist with maintaining a variety of standard records, reports, and logs using appropriate grammar. Read, analyze, comprehend, and interpret medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents. Review, process, and respond to lawsuits and attend court hearings when necessary. Facilitate accreditation of the medical program by providing required medical services. Prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures. Take appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
