Job Overview:

The LDRP RN provides comprehensive nursing care to normal and high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients for Day and Night shifts at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center . The RN will assess patients, develop and implement nursing care plans, monitor maternal and fetal conditions, assist with deliveries and obstetric procedures, administer medications, recover patients following anesthesia, provide newborn care and resuscitation, educate families, and maintain complete electronic clinical documentation.

Key Duties:

• Care for normal and high-risk obstetric patients , including patients with pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes, preterm labor, and multiple gestations.
• Perform and interpret fetal monitoring , including internal and external monitoring.
• Administer medications, IV push medications, blood products, and titrated IV drips such as Pitocin .
• Assist with vaginal and Cesarean deliveries , including scrub and circulating duties.
• Assist with amniocentesis and NST/CST testing.
• Recover mothers and infants following general or regional anesthesia , including epidural and intrathecal anesthesia.
• Recognize and respond rapidly to maternal, fetal, and newborn emergencies.
• Provide initial newborn care and neonatal resuscitation .
• Operate radiant warmers, infusion pumps, cardiac monitoring equipment, oxygen equipment, glucose monitors, and pulse oximeters.
• Determine newborn readiness for rooming-in, NICU transfer, or discharge.
• Provide maternal, newborn, breastfeeding, medication, and family education.
• Document assessments, medications, interventions, physician orders, and education in the electronic health record.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, simulations, training, quality improvement, committees, and unit activities.
• May serve as a Lead Shift Nurse without formal supervisory authority.
• May float to NICU or Pediatrics after formal cross-training and competency verification, with acuity-appropriate assignments.

Qualifications:

Degree/Education: Diploma, Associate Degree (AD), or BSN from an accredited school of nursing. The PWS specifies graduation from a nursing program accredited by ACEN or CCNE .

Experience: Must have been continuously employed as a Registered Nurse for 3 years prior to starting at WRNMMC , including at least 2 years as an RN in a high-risk Obstetrical Unit . Must have experience across the full spectrum of Labor & Delivery, antepartum, triage, C-section circulating, and postpartum care .

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license from a U.S. State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.  

Required Certifications: Must have and maintain BLS, ALS or ACLS, S.T.A.B.L.E., CPR, NRP, Intermediate Fetal Monitoring or higher/Advanced Fetal Monitoring , plus the DHA perinatal requirement of ALSO every 3 years or ECO every 2 years .

Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen .

Computer Skills: Basic computer proficiency, including word processing, data entry, and electronic medical records such as MHS GENESIS . 

Schedule:

WRNMMC operates around-the-clock for these inpatient services. Standard shifts are 12.5 hours , including a 30-minute unpaid meal break: Day 6:45 AM–7:15 PM and Night 6:45 PM–7:15 AM . Nurses must work at least 50% of weekends during each six-week scheduling period and be available for at least 50% of applicable federal holidays and at least one Prime Holiday Period annually. L&D nurses are also scheduled for one on-call shift per pay period .

Work Environment:

This position works in Walter Reed's Mother Infant Care Center/Labor & Delivery environment , providing continuous inpatient care to mothers and newborns, including high-risk obstetric cases and emergencies. It is a fast-paced clinical environment requiring strong fetal-monitoring, delivery, C-section, anesthesia-recovery, newborn-resuscitation, and emergency-response skills.

Health & Security Requirements :

Must meet WRNMMC occupational-health and immunization requirements, including required health documentation, TB screening, annual influenza immunization, applicable vaccinations, and N95 requirements. The position also requires Government security processing and a Child Care Background Check (CBC) .
