JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title: Universal Banker FLSA: Nonexempt

Reports To: Teller Supervisor, Lobby Services Manager, Operations Manager

 

General Summary

The Universal Banker is a vital, customer-facing role primarily focused on delivering exceptional customer service while serving as the bank's key liaison to clients. This position acts as the primary client contact, empowered to manage the entire customer relationship: from processing complex daily banking transactions, cashing checks, and handling vault operations in an accurate and timely manner, to opening and maintaining accounts and other bank services. The position is responsible for establishing and maintaining strong business and personal accounts relationships, actively managing the customer service queue by following up on requests, and efficiently completing all other operational and relationship tasks assigned by branch management. Furthermore, the Universal Banker proactively identifies client financial needs, cross-sells the full range of the bank's products and provides solutions to drive personal and team goals in deposit and relationship growth, all while consistently ensuring strict adherence to established policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance.

Functions and Responsibilities

Customer & Account Management

• Service: Provide exceptional service, resolve complex customer service issues, account discrepancies, and operational errors promptly.
• Account Opening/Maintenance: Accurately open, close, and maintain personal and business accounts with complete and compliant documentation. Handle client concerns on statement reconciliation and perform changes to existing accounts.
• Relationship Building: Maintain strong, long-term customer relationships, focusing on retention and expansion of the client depository relationship.
• Client Education: Educate customers on the proper use of self-service technologies, services, and internal banking applications.

Transactions & Cash Handling

• Processing: Efficiently and accurately process a high volume of complex transactions, including deposits, withdrawals, check cashing, transfers, loan payments, and official checks, while adhering to prescribed limits.
• Cash Control: Maintain and balance a cash drawer and/or cash recycler daily, ensuring accuracy and security.
• Risk Mitigation: Minimize risk of losses, including cash differences, by complying with policies such as Client ID, Check Cashing, Cash Control, and Transaction Approval Limits.

Sales, Outreach, and Goals

• Outreach: Assist in branch call efforts by regularly reviewing, updating, and calling prospect lists.
• Goal Achievement: Meet or exceed individual goals and contribute to branch sales, referral, and operational goals.
• Community: Participate regularly in community events for the benefit of the bank and professional growth.

Compliance and Operations

• Regulatory Adherence: Maintain current continuing education training and demonstrate working knowledge of all Federal and State laws and regulations, including BSA/AML/CIP Program (Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering/Customer Identification Program), Patriot Act requirements, ACH, Regulation CC, Regulation DD, and the Identity Theft Red Flags program.
• Security: Demonstrate working knowledge of the Bank’s Security Program and assist the Lobby Service Manager with security and operational procedures (vault balancing, branch opening/closing, dual control).
• Reporting/Support: Process assigned reports and support other branch staff with complex transactions and other tasks as needed.

Problem Solving & Efficiency

• Problem Solver: Resolve client complaints and errors, balancing client service with risk management. Participate in staff training to reduce erroneous occurrences.
• Time Management: Exhibit superior time management skills by setting goals, meeting deadlines, and managing workload productively.

 

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required . Professional certificate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or Business is preferred .
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience .
• Skills:
• • Ability to operate a CRT, teller machine, and 10-key calculator.
  • Excellent verbal communication (concise) and written communication (clear, concise, correct forms/paperwork).
  • Professional experience anticipating customer concerns and analyzing procedures for improvement.
  • Thoroughness, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to identify and correct errors.
  • Ability to analyze and authenticate comprehensive legal and financial documentation required for the compliant opening and maintenance of Business, Estate, and Trust accounts.
  • Experience in efficient personal organization, prioritizing multiple tasks, and using time/resources efficiently.
  • Experience seeking to improve and develop new processes and ideas.

 

Physical Demands (The physical effort generally associated with this position)

Requires prolonged standing, walking, and potential eyestrain from extended computer and document review. Must effectively manage increased stress due to peak workloads and interactions with challenging customers. Involves moderate finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for computer operation; requires occasional lifting/carrying of up to 20 pounds (e.g., cash drawers, files) and rarely up to 50 pounds.
