Deputy Superintendent

Reports To: Superintendent Supervises: Certified and Non‑Certified staff in designated departments Assigned Activity Sponsors Position Objective The Deputy Superintendent serves as a strategic executive leader who embodies and advances District 219’s mission to provide inclusive, equitable, rigorous, and relevant learning experiences. Working in partnership with the Superintendent, the Deputy Superintendent is responsible for providing executive leadership and operational oversight to implement districtwide initiatives, drive continuous improvement in academic equity and student wellbeing, foster a collaborative staff culture, and build strong, trusting partnerships with families and community partners. Minimum Qualifications Illinois Public Educator License, Superintendent Endorsement, and Principal Evaluator designation required Master’s degree in education, or a related services field Principalship or District Cabinet level experience or equivalent Teaching experience in appropriate related field Experience working successfully in a diverse, multicultural environment Curriculum experience leading strategic planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of high school curriculum and instruction Required Skills Demonstrated leadership ability to work with high school students and staff Knowledge and experience in dealing with diverse cultures represented by the community Ability to build relationships, engage in critical conversations, and maintain a professional and positive attitude Ability to work collaboratively within the school community and in a team environment Ability to problem‑solve, make independent decisions, and effectuate change Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a variety of audiences Ability to interpret, analyze, and use data to effectively present information, produce documents at a high level of sophistication, and respond to questions Ability to read, interpret, and explain materials from Board policy, administrative procedures, professional journals, and legal documents, including Illinois School Code Ability to deal with difficult situations courteously, tactfully, and with discretion and good judgment Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons Successful experience in school and district leadership, with responsibilities including teaching and learning, equity leadership and practices, professional development, student services, hiring and recruitment, retention, performance evaluation, discharge, policy development, and financial operations Ability to lead and manage collective bargaining processes Ability to lead all phases of instructional programs Performance Responsibilities Academic Equity Lead the vision and strategic direction for the district’s instructional programs, ensuring a cohesive, rigorous, relevant, culturally responsive, standards‑aligned curriculum and high‑quality instruction across grades, courses, and programs. Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of K‑12 instructional frameworks, assessment systems, and pedagogical best practices. Collaborate with the Technology Department to integrate innovative learning models and effective use of technology to expand access and engagement. Collaborate with district committees and key stakeholders to develop and sustain classroom practices that work to maintain high achievement and eliminate the racial and economic predictability and disproportionality of student achievement. Student Wellbeing Ensure student support systems including special education, mental health and behavioral supports, attendance interventions, and safety/wellness initiatives cultivate safe, inclusive, and supportive school environments. Champion equity‑focused leadership by disaggregating achievement data to identify and dismantle opportunity gaps, specifically targeting the elimination of racial and economic predictability in student outcomes. Collaborate with the Student Services and Special Education Departments to ensure compliance, individualized supports, and inclusive practices that remove barriers to student success. Provide guidance on student disciplinary matters, focusing on restorative and equitable practices aligned with District 219 values. Staff Culture Foster a collaborative professional culture in which staff feel valued, included, and supported. Collaborate with the Human Resources Department to drive equity‑centered employment practices, including recruitment, retention, and the development of a positive, inclusive workplace climate. Oversee professional learning, educator evaluation alignment, and evidence‑based pedagogical strategies. Oversee the equitable distribution of staffing resources to prioritize programs and offerings based on student needs. Oversee the complaint management process. Assist with employee matters such as discipline, reduction in force, termination, etc. Serves as a district representative in labor negotiations. Provide assistance, coaching, and consultation to administrators regarding academic equity and student wellbeing. Support building leaders and principals in their daily duties and responsibilities. Family & Community Engagement Build strong, trusting partnerships with families, community organizations, and advocacy groups. Collaborate with the Communications Department to ensure the district’s communications are consistent and reflective of the district’s strategic plan and mission. Lead community engagement for major initiatives and policy changes. Serve as a visible, responsive representative of the Superintendent with diverse stakeholder groups. District Cohesion & Accountability Lead design, implementation, and continuous improvement of integrated district systems (curriculum, instruction, assessment, special education, MTSS, social‑emotional supports) to produce measurable gains in student learning and equity. Oversee progress monitoring and reporting on Superintendent goals; recommend course corrections and resource reallocations. Establish clear metrics, accountability structures, and performance monitoring for direct reports and district initiatives. Develop and manage data dashboards, progress reports, and presentations to communicate outcomes and fiscal/operational impacts. Operations & Management Maintain a transparent, timely communication cabinet, principals, staff, families, and community partners. Collaborate with the Finance Department and other cabinet members to align budgetary decisions with instructional priorities and equity goals. Support grant strategy and ensure responsible stewardship of resources tied to learning and student services. Strategic Leadership Translate the district mission and cabinet priorities into coherent operational plans, timelines, and measurable outcomes. Center equity and inclusion in all planning, policy, staffing, and resource decisions; disaggregate data to surface opportunity gaps and prioritize strategies for underserved learners. Assume the essential functions of the Superintendent’s role in his or her absence. Provide input and support to the Superintendent in all general administrative matters. Attend Board meetings and Superintendent’s Cabinet meetings. Attend and preside over Board Committee meetings as Superintendent’s designee. Prepare and submit reports and documents for Superintendent and the Board. Perform all other duties assigned by the Superintendent. Terms of Employment 260‑day work calendar with irregular or extended work hours including evenings and weekends. Working Conditions The position requires physical activity including lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and use of fine motor skills. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and may involve exposure to temperature extremes and potential safety hazards. Reasonable accommodations may be made in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Salary Range Target hiring range for this position will be between $245,000 to $270,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
