Position Summary

We are seeking a senior-level software engineer with applied research experience to design, build, and support secure software systems across enterprise, cybersecurity, and scientific/mission-focused environments. This role is ideal for an engineer who has owned end-to-end delivery—architecture through implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support—and who can move comfortably between modern web/service stacks and hardware-adjacent embedded integration when needed. The position supports programs where security, reliability, documentation, and disciplined engineering practices are critical.

Key Responsibilities

The engineer will lead development of secure applications and services, including solutions that handle sensitive content such as file and message search, indexing, and controlled access to results. The role includes building and enhancing Java-based systems and web services, integrating search technologies such as Elasticsearch and Lucene-style indexing approaches, and implementing robust APIs for internal and external integrations. The engineer will contribute across the stack by supporting or delivering front-end capabilities using established web frameworks (including Angular and Ext JS), while maintaining strong back-end engineering practices with frameworks aligned to Spring-based development.

This role also requires the ability to troubleshoot, deploy, and administer systems in both Linux and Windows environments, including higher-security or restricted settings. In programs involving applied engineering, the candidate may collaborate with hardware designers and embedded developers to integrate software with specialized hardware, develop test and performance tools, and implement low-level communication interfaces (e.g., SPI/I2C) to support FPGA/SoC-based solutions. The engineer will be expected to follow quality-focused development practices, implement automated testing (e.g., JUnit/TestNG), participate in agile/scrum delivery, and provide technical mentorship to junior engineers as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have substantial professional experience delivering production software and demonstrable expertise in Java development for enterprise systems. Experience should include web application and service development using modern Java frameworks (including Spring MVC/Spring Boot patterns), API and integration development, and database-backed application design using common SQL platforms such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, or Microsoft SQL Server. The candidate must be comfortable operating across Windows and Linux environments and able to support deployments, troubleshooting, and system administration responsibilities when required.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong preference is given to candidates with cybersecurity-domain experience, especially implementing secure search, access controls, and systems handling sensitive data. Experience with identity and access management technologies such as OpenAM/ForgeRock and directory integrations (LDAP) is highly desirable. Additional preferred strengths include multi-language development (C/C++/C#/Python/JavaScript), legacy modernization (migrating thick-client capabilities to web-based architectures), and embedded/IoT development experience that includes hardware/software integration and low-level protocols. Familiarity with common build and delivery tooling (Git, Maven/Gradle, CI pipelines) and modern platform concepts (e.g., Kubernetes) is a plus.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or a closely related discipline) is required. A background blending software engineering with applied research work is strongly valued.

Security / Clearance (Role-Dependent)

This position may support classified or restricted programs and may require an active Top Secret/SCI clearance (or the ability to obtain/maintain clearance), depending on assignment needs.

Position Details:

• Pay Rate / Range: $63-68_
