Position Overview Certified Nursing Assistant I / Health Unit Coordinator – Abdominal Transplant Unit (6DCT) Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC. 37‑bed Acute Care Adult Transplant unit providing care for liver, kidney, pancreas, small bowel, and hand transplant patients. Compensation and Schedule Commitment Bonus: $5,000 paid in two equal installments. Shift type: Nights or rotating shifts. 3–12 hour shifts per week. Key Responsibilities Assist RN/LPN with direct patient care and non‑direct unit coordination. Provide personal care procedures (feeding, bathing, hair care, clothing change, nail care, bed‑making, ambulation, enemas, skin care, bowel and bladder elimination) and any additional care required. Administer treatment procedures: fingersticks for blood glucose testing, assist with physical examinations, change non‑sterile dressings, weigh patients. Document vital signs, intake/output, and other patient data in the electronic health record. Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures. Perform clerical tasks: acknowledge orders on EMR task list, schedule appointments, manage tasks. Maintain patient environment: clean assigned area, stock and replenish supplies and equipment. Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients. Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens. Assist with wound dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours old, when appropriate. Support own professional development: maintain required skills validation and attend educational offerings. Collaborate with nursing staff on communication systems. Perform additional related duties incidental to work. Qualifications Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation. BCLS certification maintained or completed by the end of orientation. Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb all day; frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computers and/or paper documentation tools. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff. Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients. Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, basic health and safety precautions applicable to hospital work. Working knowledge of hospital organization and physical layout. Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions. Essential Physical Job Functions Requires sustained standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing. Frequently lifts or moves objects and patients over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment. May require pre‑employment physical capacity testing.
