Job Title: Controls Engineer Job Description

The Controls Engineer supports the installation, commissioning, and validation of control systems for mission-critical data centers. This role focuses on Building Management Systems (BMS), Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), and integrated SCADA architectures, ensuring all control system components function reliably and accurately throughout the commissioning lifecycle.

Responsibilities
  • Support the installation and commissioning of the data center Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS).
  • Verify and troubleshoot control system I/O wiring to ensure accurate signal transmission and reliable operation.
  • Perform field calibration of instrumentation when required to maintain measurement accuracy and system performance.
  • Conduct loop testing of device data points to verify each point is correctly integrated with the SCADA system from field device to control interface.
  • Perform functional testing of control systems comprised of PLCs, HMIs, and vendor systems to confirm proper operation under various scenarios.
  • Document testing progress and results using spreadsheets and online tracking tools such as BIM360 and CxAlloy.
  • Perform general system troubleshooting for network issues, wiring issues, data point mapping issues, and operational issues across the control system.
  • Collaborate with commissioning and integration teams to identify, debug, and correct control system deficiencies.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of commissioning processes and documentation standards within a mission-critical environment.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering or technical discipline.
  • Basic commissioning experience with control systems, including an understanding of control system components, wiring, and networking.
  • Experience working with Rockwell PLCs in an industrial or mission-critical setting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with controls commissioning.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Ignition SCADA software.
  • Ability to make corrections to control logic and configurations and to troubleshoot and debug control system issues.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and integrated vendor control systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing wiring, network, and data mapping issues.
  • Proficiency in documenting test procedures, results, and commissioning progress in spreadsheets and online platforms.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Background as a commissioning engineer or similar role in controls or automation.
  • Familiarity with Rockwell automation platforms and related software tools.
  • Experience working with Ignition for data visualization, SCADA, and system integration.
  • Understanding of mission-critical environments such as data centers and their reliability requirements.
  • Comfort working with online tracking and project management tools such as BIM360 and CxAlloy.
  • Ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate documentation and quality control.
  • Interest in growing within a rapidly expanding systems integrator in the mission-critical industry.
Work Environment

This role is based on a data center project located in Helper, Utah, with the current project slated to run until March 2027, after which the Controls Engineer will transition to a different project site. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work depending on project needs and commissioning milestones. The environment is mission-critical, with a strong focus on reliability, safety, and adherence to commissioning procedures. Work is primarily performed on-site in an industrial data center setting, involving regular interaction with control panels, instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, and networking equipment, as well as use of laptops and online tools for documentation and tracking.
