Academic Advisor

Job Title

Under the direction of the assigned manager, work closely with students in a group or one-one setting to share information concerning course selection, transfer procedures, degree and certificate requirements, registration and testing procedures; to respond to student questions regarding majors, general education and graduation requirements; and to support outreach services to high school seniors.

Responsibilities and Duties

Essential functions include:

• Sharing information with students concerning transfer procedures, degree and certificate requirements, registration and testing procedures; referring students to various campus services and offices for specialized assistance as appropriate.
• Implementing program activities that support student success in the assigned area and in support of the commitment to equity for new, at risk, and continuing students through workshops or group activities.
• Coordinating with other District departments to schedule and utilize staff and resources.
• Providing assistance to students who have seen a counselor and developed a student education plan in the development of class schedules.
• Referring students to counselors as appropriate and providing a variety of assistance to counselors as needed.
• Referring students to the Transfer Center and Counseling to research their college or career interests by using the career resource library and inventory of occupational, vocational, and training information.
• Providing support for group advising including sessions in which counselors create abbreviated student education plans.
• Working with the District to support student success.
• Training and overseeing the work of student employees, as assigned.
• Participating in District events including: college and career nights on and off campus.
• Monitoring and supporting student success using the District case management system, tools and technology and referring students to resources on and off campus, as needed.
• Assisting in reviewing and updating the assigned area website, as required.
• Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Basic web page and social media operations.
• Local community agencies and community-based resources.
• Office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, word processing software, database software, and internet.
• Principles and practices of record keeping.

Ability to:

• Understand and work with the diverse needs of the student populations served by the District.
• Meet with students, recognize student needs and make appropriate referrals.
• Provide information to students on the availability of programs and services.
• Plan, organize and conduct workshops and presentations to students, parents, the community, and District personnel.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from students, faculty, staff and the general public.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, individually and in small and large groups.
• Work independently or in a team environment.
• Apply analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.

Education and experience: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: Three years' experience in providing advice to students regarding course selection, academic plans to encourage completion of academic study.
