Position Overview This position is responsible for protecting and serving the campus community by enforcing applicable laws and college policies. The Police Officer promotes a safe and supportive learning environment through proactive patrol, emergency response, and community-oriented policing practices. This position reports to the Director of Public Safety/Chief of Police and exercises no supervision. NOTE: This is a security sensitive position and an appropriate background investigation will be made on applicants being strongly considered for this position. Selection Criteria Knowledge of: Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances applicable to campus law enforcement Principles, practices, and procedures of campus policing and public safety in a higher education environment Crime prevention strategies, including community-oriented policing methods Criminal and traffic investigation techniques, including evidence collection and preservation Emergency response protocols, including incident command systems and crisis management First aid, CPR, and basic life-saving techniques Report writing, records management, and legal documentation standards Skills in: Communicating effectively and de‑escalating situations with diverse populations, including students, faculty, and the public Operating law enforcement equipment, including firearms, radios, and other issued tools, safely and proficiently Utilizing technology such as computers, mobile devices, and law enforcement databases for reporting and information retrieval Observing, assessing, and responding appropriately to potentially dangerous or suspicious situations Managing conflict and applying sound judgment in high‑pressure or rapidly evolving situations Ability to: Maintain physical fitness sufficient to perform patrol duties, including walking, running, climbing stairs, and working in various weather conditions Enforce laws and regulations while exercising discretion, professionalism, and ethical judgment Prepare clear, accurate, and concise reports and documentation Work collaboratively with campus departments and external law enforcement agencies Recognize safety hazards and take appropriate corrective or preventive action Make timely and effective decisions under stress, including determining appropriate use of force when necessary Demonstrate integrity, accountability, and professionalism in all aspects of the role Provide caring, high‑quality service by creating welcoming experiences, communicating clearly and proactively, addressing needs with professionalism and empathy, and ensuring individuals are thoughtfully connected to appropriate resources Working Conditions Exertive: Significant exertion on a daily basis. Awkward positions and sustained activities require strength. Frequent moderate lifting is required. Significant Risk: Significant risk of injury or loss of life, which can be partially controlled by use of significant safety precautions. In addition, actions can result in significant risk to others. Minimum Qualification Requirements Education: High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, which may include related certification or practical training. Experience: Two years’ of increasingly responsible experience in police operations. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. License or Certificate: A current Texas Peace Officer license required; possession of, or ability to obtain, a First‑aid Certificate and a CPR Certification; must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under college automobile policy with an ability to maintain insurability.
