Position Details Emergency Medicine Physician Location: Oakland, CA Hospital: Highland General Hospital (Highland Hospital) Employment type: Services As Needed / Per Diem (FTE: 0.01) Pay Range: $169.66-$179.86 per hour Responsibilities Provide appropriate medical services to all patients presenting to the Emergency Department. Provide services for the contracted number of shifts for EM core faculty at Highland, as set forth by the AHMG Compensation Committee, including backup duties as determined by the Chair and consistent with the departmental scheduling policy. Supervise and teach residents, interns, medical students, and other learners in patient care and emergency medicine practice. Foster a supportive and safe clinical learning environment for residents, students, and learners. Work and collaborate with consultants and subspecialists collegially to serve patients. Model exceptional clinical practice and communication skills for learners. Deliver care based on best practices and evidence‑based medicine, adhering to applicable standards of care, medical ethics, and policies and protocols. Complete documentation in the Electronic Health Record in a timely fashion, in accordance with AHS Health Information Management policies. Provide online base hospital medical control and consultation for Alameda County EMS providers. Take all necessary actions to facilitate appropriate transfer of a patient to or from other facilities when required. Consult with EM QRC leadership to improve clinical outcomes, quality of patient care, and efficient utilization of physician and hospital resources. Report material concerns about quality of care or delivery delays to departmental leadership and hospital administration as needed. Comply with AHS Medical Staff bylaws, The Joint Commission, and all applicable policies, code of conduct, rules, and regulations. Support departmental operations and nursing leadership in implementing new procedures, controls, and systems to promote quality, cost control, reimbursement functions, and standardization of products and equipment. Provide effective and timely communications to referring or admitting physicians, patients, and families concerning each patient’s clinical status admitted through the Emergency Department. Perform other duties assigned by the department Chair or Vice Chair. Academic Responsibilities Residency core faculty duties include: Active participation in Emergency Medicine residency teaching conferences, including weekly didactics and monthly Journal Club/Follow‑Up sessions. Attend and contribute to residency orientation sessions; serve as a mock oral board examiner. Develop and deliver a minimum of three core lectures per year. Lead a minimum of three Journal Club or Follow‑Up sessions per year. Participate and contribute to monthly small‑group sessions, procedural teaching, simulation, and resident professional development. Participate at a prominent level in residency interviewing, recruitment, ranking and selection processes. Support/mentor residency involvement in patient safety, including instruction around root‑cause analyses and True North metrics. Provide career guidance and mentorship for residents. Contribute at least one scholarly work/project each year toward the ACGME EM RRC requirement for academic productivity. Represent the residency program locally and nationally at professional conferences, committee work, policy work, multi‑institutional collaborations, and other speaking/teaching engagements. Provide timely and specific feedback to residents at the conclusion of each clinical shift. Complete written evaluations in the Residency Management System and contribute to improvement of evaluation methods and tools. Complete the ACGME Annual Faculty Survey. Participate in professional development on an annual basis that improves performance as educators, quality improvement, well‑being, and inpatient care. Serve as a member of at least one departmental or system‑wide committee. Support the department’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in recruitment and training of a physician workforce that reflects the community. Participate as a voting member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee. Complete all educational and competency modules set forth by AHS or AHMG for compliance. Attend bi‑monthly staff meetings unless working clinically/post‑shift/on PTO/on leave. Participate in 70% of all residency interview sessions unless otherwise on PTO or leave. Assist the department with teaching, administrative, and clinical needs as they arise, agreed upon jointly with the EM Chair. Create annual goals and review them with the EM Chair and/or Vice Chair annually. Minimum Qualifications Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) required. Board Eligible or Board Certified in Emergency Medicine required. Valid license to practice medicine in the State of California required. Valid DEA license required.
