Job Description

This role sits within the transmission department and focuses on the engineering and design of transmission line projects that support utility customers. The Transmission Line Engineer collaborates closely with senior engineers, in-house teams, and client engineers and designers to deliver complete projects from initial concept through construction. The position involves technical design, project coordination, and occasional site visits to ensure safe and compliant execution.

Responsibilities

• Perform engineering and design activities for transmission line projects, including engineering analysis, route selection, material acquisition, structural and foundation design, and project and construction management.
• Prepare comprehensive project construction documents such as plan and profile drawings, detailed design drawings, engineering and material specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, and bills of material.
• Develop and evaluate project design alternatives and prepare corresponding cost estimates to support decision-making.
• Design new transmission facilities for voltage levels ranging from 12 kV to 765 kV, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
• Utilize PLS-CADD to model and analyze transmission line designs and optimize line routing and structures.
• Use MicroStation and AutoCAD to create, update, and maintain transmission line design drawings and related documentation.
• Conduct contractor bid meetings and construction meetings to support the procurement and execution phases of projects.
• Assist in ensuring that construction activities are performed safely, in accordance with project plans, established schedules, internal policies, rules, standards, and external regulations.
• Coordinate effectively with governmental and regulatory agencies and contractors to secure project permits and approvals.
• Provide leadership within project teams to facilitate on-time and quality project completion.
• Train and mentor other engineers, helping them develop their technical and project skills.
• Develop measurable goals and objectives for the work area to support continuous improvement and project performance.
• Function as a project lead for transmission projects, managing scope, schedule, and technical deliverables.
• Coordinate work activities of team members within the work group and department to ensure alignment and timely completion of project tasks.
• Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees, supporting their growth and ensuring consistent design standards.
• Initiate corrective actions when substation-related project objectives or transmission project objectives are not being met, addressing issues proactively.
• Work under the supervision of higher-level engineers while progressively taking on more responsibility as experience grows.
• Perform occasional site visits to review field conditions, support construction activities, and verify that designs are implemented as intended.

Essential Skills

• Two to five years of experience in utilities working with transmission line design.
• Two to five years of experience completing engineering projects from start to finish, including design, documentation, and coordination.
• Two to five years of experience scoping, estimating, and ordering materials for transmission line projects.
• Proficiency in PLS-CADD for modeling and analyzing transmission line design projects.
• Experience using MicroStation for creating and modifying transmission line design drawings.
• Experience using AutoCAD for engineering design and drafting of transmission line projects.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, with the degree counting toward years of experience.
• Ability to prepare detailed engineering documentation, including plan and profile drawings, specifications, schedules, and bills of material.
• Strong understanding of transmission line engineering principles, including structural and foundation design and route selection.
• Ability to coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including engineers, designers, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
• Capability to lead aspects of transmission projects while working under the supervision of Sr Engineers

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license is desirable but not required.
• Experience designing transmission facilities across a wide voltage range, from 12 kV up to 765 kV.
• Familiarity with project and construction management practices for utility transmission projects.
• Experience conducting contractor bid and construction meetings.
• Ability to provide training, mentoring, and guidance to lower-level engineers and designers.
• Demonstrated leadership skills in facilitating project completion and setting measurable team goals.
• Strong communication skills for working with governmental and regulatory agencies to secure permits.
• Comfort with occasional site visits to support field activities and verify design implementation.

This is a Permanent position based out of Phoenix, AZ.

The pay range for this position is $40.00 - $50.00/hr.

This is a hybrid position in Phoenix,AZ.
