GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Plans, organizes, implements, and delivers special education services and instruction at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, assigned to a high security correctional facility, and have a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs. Provides direct instruction in a resource classroom, in-class support in a regular classroom, and out-of-class supplemental support to students who need an alternative setting for additional services. Work involves assessing students, providing individualized, competency based instruction, and maintaining a positive teaching/learning environment in which youth are guided and encouraged to develop and fulfill their academic potential.

May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per workweek and be on-call.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Plans, prepares, and delivers instructional activities that facilitate an active learning environment.


Observes and evaluates youth's performance and development; provides appropriate feedback on work; and encourages and monitors the progress of individual students.


Identifies the learning needs of students and interprets assessment information; and identifies and selects different instructional resources and methods to meet youths' varying needs.


Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.


Maintains accurate and complete records of youths' progress and development; and updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws and agency policies.


Provides educational services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments (volatile, aggressive, suicidal) and specialized needs (chemically dependent, sexual offenders).


Treats youth with respect in all situations and the ability to react quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis.


Keeps up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans.


Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

• Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
• Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.

Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree.

Required:

• Valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification to teach Special Education. Acceptable certifications include: Generic Special Education (High School), Secondary Generic Special Education (Grades 6-12), and/or Special Education (Early Childhood - Grade 12).

• Highly qualified to teach special education.

Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.

Requirements for Continued Employment:

• Failure to maintain required licenses/certifications will result in termination of employment.

This position is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency.

• Review and implement agency policies, procedures, and operating guidelines.

• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, administrators, and other professionals involved in the education of agency youth.
• Work under stressful conditions, with possible occurrences of extreme heightened stress.
• Work independently with minimum supervision.
• Work collaboratively with all stakeholders and maintain a professional, courteous demeanor.
• Keep accurate files and records.
• Work in excess of 40 hours per work week and be on-call.
