Observes and evaluates youth's performance and development; provides appropriate feedback on work; and encourages and monitors the progress of individual students.
Identifies the learning needs of students and interprets assessment information; and identifies and selects different instructional resources and methods to meet youths' varying needs.
Establishes and communicates clear objectives for all learning activities.
Maintains accurate and complete records of youths' progress and development; and updates all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws and agency policies.
Provides educational services to potentially aggressive/combative youth in a correctional setting with a wide variety of temperaments (volatile, aggressive, suicidal) and specialized needs (chemically dependent, sexual offenders).
Treats youth with respect in all situations and the ability to react quickly and effectively to verbally and physically defuse hazardous, combative, volatile situations on an as needed basis.
Keeps up to date with developments in the subject area, teaching resources, and methods, and make relevant changes to instructional plans.
Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed. Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree. Required: • Valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification to teach Special Education. Acceptable certifications include: Generic Special Education (High School), Secondary Generic Special Education (Grades 6-12), and/or Special Education (Early Childhood - Grade 12). • Highly qualified to teach special education. Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution. Requirements for Continued Employment: • Failure to maintain required licenses/certifications will result in termination of employment. This position is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of:

- Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
- Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.

- State and federal education laws and regulations.
- Subject matter to be taught and lead discussions.
- Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Operating computers and using applicable computer software.
- Implement Texas Education Agency (TEA) policies and procedures.
- Review and implement agency policies, procedures, and operating guidelines.
- Convey and interpret information to students.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, administrators, and other professionals involved in the education of agency youth.
- Work under stressful conditions, with possible occurrences of extreme heightened stress.
- Work independently with minimum supervision.
- Work collaboratively with all stakeholders and maintain a professional, courteous demeanor.
- Keep accurate files and records.
- Work in excess of 40 hours per work week and be on-call.
