Intermediate Care Technician

Summary This Intermediate Care Technician is assigned to the Specialty Care Clinics under the Division of Hospital and Specialty Medicine at VA Portland Health Care System. Qualifications At least one year of specialized experience in a clinical setting that demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position, or an equivalent level of experience at the GS‑6 grade. One year of full‑time graduate education or internship directly related to the role, obtained from an accredited institution. Proficiency in basic written and spoken English, as required for direct patient care positions. Preferred Experience One year of outpatient clinical experience, including dermatology or wound care. Military occupational specialties such as Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, or Medical Technician. Duties Perform patient screening and collect health information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Complete templates and tools for outpatient intake, normal result notes, and follow‑up treatment protocols. Assist in behavioral and psychiatric situations, including crisis intervention and management of aggressive or suicidal patients. Administer medications by all routes, following national and local pharmacy guidelines. Assist licensed staff with medical evaluation, equipment setup, and treatment during in‑person or virtual visits. Operate specialized medical equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Collect specimens for transfer to processing laboratories. Initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BLS) and use an automatic external defibrillator (AED) as certified. Observe patient status and keep licensed personnel informed of any changes in condition. Perform clinical tasks such as vital signs, point‑of‑care testing, specimen preparation, wound care, and patient education within scope of care. Work Schedule Monday – Friday. Possible hours include 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, 7:30 AM – 5:00 PM, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM, 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM, and 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM PST. Final schedule will be determined by the manager at the time of hire, considering service needs and applicant input. Telework Not authorized. Virtual This is not a virtual position.
