Traffic Control Specialist Trainee

Overview Traffic Control Specialist Trainee – a 12‑month training program with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The role prepares the trainee to support roadway safety and traffic engineering tasks for Pennsylvania roads. Responsibilities Assist with routine traffic studies for signals, warning devices, and other electronic equipment. Support the review and preparation of less complex traffic signal designs and technical studies. Evaluate traffic routes, pavement markings, and signage to identify safety concerns. Use computer software to complete capacity reviews and timing analyses for signal optimization. Examine traffic control plans for construction projects and utility operations. Provide information to staff and customers through reports, communications, and participation in studies. Work Schedule and Compensation Full‑time employment, Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:00 PM with a 30‑minute lunch. Telework opportunity up to three days per week, subject to change. Salary determined by PennDOT compensation guidelines. Qualifications One year as a Traffic Control Technician (or equivalent); or Four years of transportation engineering assignments (e.g., traffic data collection, signal inspection) and high‑school graduation; or Two years in transportation engineering assignments and an associate’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or civil engineering technology; or A bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, civil engineering technology, or a closely related field; or Equivalent combination of experience and training. Applicants may be considered within three months of graduating with a qualifying degree. Other Requirements Must meet Pennsylvania residency requirement.
