Senior Automotive Mechanic

The County of Riverside’s Purchasing and Fleet Department is seeking a Senior Automotive Mechanic to join the Fleet Services Division at the garage located on Orange Street in Riverside. The Senior Automotive Mechanic will be responsible for the full scope of diagnostic, troubleshooting, and complex mechanical repair work for a fleet of vehicles. This includes identifying and resolving engine knocks, unusual noises and mechanical failures, as well as diagnosing and repairing issues involving transaxles, transmissions, and differentials. Work will be performed on a variety of gasoline and alternative fuel‑powered automobiles and light trucks. In addition, the Senior Automotive Mechanic will lead and train other mechanics and perform installations of smog devices and other specialized vehicle equipment, and perform other duties as needed. Department Overview The Purchasing and Fleet Services Department provides vehicles, goods and services to other County Departments and agencies within Riverside County. It manages procurement, contract management, reporting, and emergency logistical support to benefit Riverside County agencies. Responsibilities Assign, evaluate, and participate in major and minor mechanical repairs on motorized vehicles powered by gas and alternative fuel engines, including automobiles and light trucks. Estimate time and materials needed for a variety of repair work; requisition materials and supplies; and assist in the training of less experienced mechanics and service workers. Perform difficult mechanical repairs; diagnose motor knocks, noises or failures; diagnose transaxle, transmission, and differential failures; interpret computer command control fault codes; read, comprehend, and follow electrical and mechanical schematics. Perform installation of smog devices and special equipment on vehicles. Perform random quality assurance inspections on completed vehicle repairs; inspect the garage for safety violations; and conduct monthly safety meetings as directed. Assume responsibility of the garage in the absence of the Automotive Services Supervisor. Qualifications Two years as a journey‑level automotive mechanic. Experience utilizing fleet management systems, with FASTER fleet management software preferred, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook and Excel) for tracking repairs, maintaining service records, and communicating effectively. Experience in a lead or supervisory capacity is highly desirable, including the ability to provide guidance, training, and technical support to other mechanics. Previous automotive maintenance experience in a public sector or government fleet environment is preferred, particularly experience maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. License & Equipment License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license Class “C” or higher is required. Candidates must also hold an Unlimited Smog License and Brake Adjuster’s License. Candidates without current valid licenses have one year from the time of appointment to obtain them. Selected applicants will be required to provide their own personal hand tools; all other equipment (e.g., lifts, brake machines) will be provided. A tool allowance of $750.00 per year is available to offset tool expenses. Uniforms will be provided. Physical / Environmental Conditions The Senior Automotive Mechanic works in a garage and outdoors and is exposed to inclement weather. The role requires physical mobility to stand for extended periods and to lift, move, and position heavy vehicle components, including engines and systems, using their hands or a crane when necessary. The mechanic must also lift, carry, push, and pull heavy tools and equipment while diagnosing vehicles, with or without assistance. The position involves working on uneven or wet surfaces while transporting tools and equipment. Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of: Tools, equipment, practices and materials used in the maintenance and repair of light motorized vehicles; principles of internal combustion engines. Abilities: Diagnose motor knocks, noise, or failures; diagnose and repair fuel injection systems and drivability problems; operate equipment used in repairing, servicing, and analyzing engine performance; diagnose and repair heating and air conditioning failures, brake systems, emission control systems, and major component repair; estimate time and materials needed to complete a job; do mechanical work; assign, direct, and evaluate the work of others; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
