UAW is seeking experienced candidates who share these ambitions to apply for the position of Assistant Legislative Director , with a focus on manufacturing policy. Candidates should have significant expertise in relevant issue areas and federal-level advocacy, as well as the ability to bring an organizing approach to legislative campaigns.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Act as a senior leader and assist in the strategic planning of the Legislative Department. 
• Help manage and support the department’s work in issue areas relevant to the auto industry and other manufacturing sectors with a UAW footprint, including trade and industrial policy, labor law, transportation, technology, environment and climate, defense, aerospace, and agriculture. 
• Work with Members of Congress and federal agencies to advance the interests of UAW members and the working class in the federal policymaking process, including by supporting UAW member-led advocacy.
• Closely track and analyze relevant news, policy debates, and activity across the federal government. 
• Develop original policy proposals and draft legislation.
• Work collaboratively within the UAW, and in partnership with other labor unions and allied organizations, to lead successful legislative campaigns. 
• Manage legislative staff as assigned. 

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

• At least 5-7 years of federal legislative advocacy and/or policy experience. Hill experience is strongly preferred, and experience directly supervising a team or others is highly desired.
• Detailed knowledge of manufacturing and labor issues. 
• Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Excellent time management skills are a must. 
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present detailed information effectively.
• Must align with UAW principles and policies, maintaining a high level of integrity and ethical transparency. 
• Ability to work independently, identify challenges and develop creative solutions, and to remain calm in stressful situations. 
• Flexible and open to change.
• Comfortable with learning and navigating multiple internal systems. 
• Ability to manage, direct, and motivate support staff respectfully and positively.
• Ability to liaise effectively with UAW departmental staff, Regions, and local union leaders.
• Flexibility to work long hours, including nights and weekends.

Salary and Benefits
This is a full time, exempt position based in Washington, DC with a yearly salary of $151,501.86. UAW offers a competitive salary along with best-in-class health, retirement, and paid time off benefits. Relocation benefits may be available.
