Substation Engineering Manager

Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of substation engineers, designers, and technical specialists
  • Manage staffing, utilization, hiring, onboarding, and professional development
  • Establish engineering standards and QA/QC processes
  • Conduct technical reviews and support career progression initiatives
  • Promote collaboration across electrical, civil, structural, protection & controls, and project teams

Technical Leadership

  • Serve as technical lead for substation engineering and design execution
  • Oversee development and approval of:
    • General arrangements
    • Equipment layouts
    • Bus and conductor design
    • Grounding studies
    • Lightning protection
    • Cable routing and raceway systems
    • Control building layouts
    • Equipment specifications
  • Ensure compliance with utility standards and industry requirements
  • Support field execution, construction coordination, and issue resolution

Project Execution

  • Lead engineering delivery for greenfield and brownfield substation projects
  • Manage schedule, budget, risk, and resource planning
  • Coordinate with clients and internal project teams
  • Support proposals, project estimates, and strategic pursuits
  • Act as senior technical representative during client engagements

Business Development & Client Management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with utilities and strategic clients
  • Support account growth and repeat business opportunities
  • Participate in proposals, technical presentations, and project pursuits

A successful Substation Engineering Manager should have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 8-15+ years of substation engineering experience
  • 3+ years leading teams, projects, or engineering groups
  • Experience delivering projects across 69 kV-500 kV+ substations
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • AIS and GIS substations
    • Utility engineering standards
    • NESC, IEEE, NEC requirements
    • Equipment selection and specification
    • Engineering quality processes
  • Experience with:
    • AutoCAD
    • MicroStation
    • Bluebeam
    • Engineering/project delivery workflows
