Candidate must be eligible and willing to obtain a CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements.Bus Driver Job DescriptionSalary: Bus Driver Pay ScaleFLSA STATUS: NonexemptReports to: Director of Transportation Supervises: NoneJob Summary: Transports students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as apparent or assigned. Follow school district procedures and traffic laws when driving assigned routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GEDCompletion of bus driver training classes.Essential Duties/ResponsibilitiesPerforms pre- and post-trip school bus inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.Transports students to and from school, along with other activities and events.Cleans the bus inside and out including washing, sweeping, emptying trash, etc.Fuel bus as needed.Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations for school bus operations.Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.Secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle at the conclusion of a run or route. This includes parking the vehicle properly, making a visual inspection of the bus to check for damage and the possibility of remaining passengers, and securing all windows and doors to protect the interior of the vehicle.Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.Maintain records of names and addresses of students, locations and times of stops, route information, and time sheets.Must be able to evacuate the bus by lifting, pushing, and pulling students/passengers to safety in case of an emergency.Be attentive to traffic and weather conditions ensuring passenger safety.Engage with students as they enter and leave the bus.Performs related work as required.Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of organizational policies, procedures and protocols.Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment.Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment.Ability to assist children using patience and understanding.Administrative skills to implement established policies and procedures regarding student transportation, enforcing rules of student conduct and discipline.Common arithmetical function to count the number of students on the bus and to complete timesheetAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.Special RequirementsMust be 18 years of age.Must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License with Passenger and School Bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.Pre-employment and random DOT Drug Test is required.Pre-employment Criminal/DMV check is required.Safe driving record.Health Certificate and DOT physical exam.Physical RequirementsThe physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Work regularly requires sitting, speaking, hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel repetitive motions and occasionally requires standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling and lifting.Work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others. accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.Work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.Work regularly requires working near moving and mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes.Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Work could be in a moderately noisy location.Months of Employment: 10 monthsEvaluations: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
