Veterinarian - Full-Time, Shelter Veterinarian
Suncoast Humane Society is seeking a Full-Time Shelter Veterinarian to provide high-quality veterinary care for shelter animals while supporting wellness and preventive medicine services for the community.
This role combines shelter medicine, small-animal clinical care, and high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN). The veterinarian will work closely with shelter and clinic staff to maintain the health and well-being of animals and support the organization's mission.
New graduate veterinarians are welcome to apply. However, there is no on-site mentoring available, so new graduates must be comfortable independently performing required clinical and surgical duties.
Clinical & Surgical Responsibilities
The Shelter Veterinarian will:
- Provide veterinary care for shelter animals and clinic patients
- Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) procedures
- Perform wellness examinations and preventive care
- Diagnose and treat medical conditions affecting shelter animals
- Evaluate and manage sick and clinical cases
- Perform elective and safety-net procedures as appropriate
- Develop appropriate treatment and care plans
- Monitor animal health and recovery
- Administer vaccinations and preventive treatments
- Perform heartworm testing and other routine diagnostic services
- Provide microchipping services
- Maintain appropriate medical records and documentation
- Oversee and maintain shelter drug and medical supply inventory
- Ensure compliance with DEA requirements
- Collaborate with the Clinic Manager and shelter team regarding medical operations
- Support effective medical protocols and practices
- Communicate with staff, volunteers, and community members professionally
- Promote teamwork and a positive environment for both people and animals
Qualifications
- Veterinary degree from an accredited institution
- Valid Florida Veterinary License
- Current DEA License
- Malpractice insurance
- Strong small-animal veterinary experience preferred
- Ability to adapt to the changing needs of a shelter environment
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the community
- Compassionate and respectful approach to working with animals and people
New graduates may be considered, provided they are comfortable working independently without on-site mentorship.
