POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Deputy Sheriff position involves enforcing law and order in the rural or unincorporated districts of Somerset County and to serve the legal processes of the courts. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for security at the Somerset County courthouse and other Somerset County owned properties, as well as escort inmates to court. The Deputy Sheriff is directly responsible to the Somerset County Sheriff.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that provides the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

• Act 120 certification

• High School Diploma or GED Equivalency

• Current valid driver’s license

• Must be 21 years of age or older

• Prior police work experience (preferred but not necessary)

• Must successfully pass a background check, including FBI, Child Abuse, and MVR

• Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical exam

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules and the democratic political process. In addition, knowledge of human behavior, using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. A Deputy Sheriff will adjust actions in relation to others’ actions and have the ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so that others will understand. A Deputy Sheriff will also keep a neat and clean appearance and uniform.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

An employee in this classification is responsible for performing assignments that are technical in nature and are carried out in accordance with administrative and personnel practices, procedures and precedents, specific goals and objectives and any applicable legal standards or regulations. Specific job duties include the following:

• Furnish security at the Somerset County Courthouse and other County-owned property.

• Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.

• Investigate illegal or suspicious activities within the Courthouse.

• Notify patrol units to take violators into custody or to provide needed assistance or medical aid.

• Question individuals entering secured areas to determine their business, directing and rerouting individuals as necessary.

• Record daily activities, and submit logs and other related reports and paperwork to appropriate authorities.

• Serve civil papers and other court orders.

• Serve protection from abuse orders filed through the Prothonotary’s Office and approved by the Judge.

• Assist local police departments and the State Police at accident scenes when requested.

• Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders

• Participate in twenty (20) hours of refresher training bi-annually

• Do prisoner transports before and after sentencing

• Qualify once a year with a firearm.

• Certify in CPR and basic first aid.

• Furnish courtroom security when inmates are in the courtroom for hearings or trial (The Deputy Sheriff must wear a white shirt and tie at own expense)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods, keyboard, write, talk or hear; stand occasionally; lift up to ten (10) pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. In addition, the employee may deal with conflict situations and unpleasant people. The employee has daily contact with people, including external customers, other County employees and the public. The employee is subjected to indoor and outdoor conditions, and will spend regular intervals either sitting or standing. Accuracy in this position is of the utmost importance and the position also requires a very high responsibility for public safety.
