EMERGENCY RADIO COORDINATOR (COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR II) Job Overview Control One, the county-wide interoperable communications center, serves Orange County’s law enforcement, fire, public works, lifeguard, state and federal agencies. Emergency Radio Coordinators operate radio communications consoles around the clock, coordinating traffic and information on multiple mutual aid channels, and providing critical data via the Purple channel for criminal justice databases and the OCATS system. Key Responsibilities Operate and maintain various radio consoles for the 24‑hour Sheriff’s Communication Center. Coordinate radio communications for public safety activities through the 800 MHz Countywide Communications System. Access statewide CLETS, nationwide NLETS, and NCIC databases to run vehicle, subject, and property checks (driver license records, warrant checks, stolen property, firearms). Monitor and coordinate over multiple mutual aid radio channels (Purple, Red, CALAW8, TAN Call) and other public works, law enforcement, fire, and hospital channels. Use the Orange County EMS ReddiNet/HEAR System to broadcast “SIGALERT” traffic advisories, Amber Alerts, and other emergency alerts via the AlertOC platform. Assist in contacting county, state, and federal agencies, especially after hours and on weekends. Minimum Qualifications & Core Competencies General knowledge of Orange County geography, highways, major buildings, and public safety communication center operations. General knowledge of information obtainable from local, state, and national criminal justice data banks. Ability to operate communications equipment including multiple channel radio consoles and video data communications terminals. React quickly, efficiently, and calmly in emergencies. Follow written and oral instructions and apply applicable regulations, including FCC rules. Speak clearly and distinctly in English. Prepare records and perform simple typing. Use a county‑approved means of transportation. No significant hearing impairment in either ear. Valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment. Clear background investigation (history form, interview, fingerprinting, possible polygraph). Desirable Qualifications Experience or training as an emergency communications operator, dispatcher, or similar position. Experience with computers and various software programs. Comfortable broadcasting over radio in emergency situations. Able to multi‑task in a demanding environment while maintaining composure. Availability for mandatory shifts as required by the department. Special Requirements No significant hearing impairment in either ear. Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher, is required by date of appointment. Physical, Mental, and Environmental Requirements Vision sufficient to read standard text and view a computer monitor; hearing sufficient for voice and radio communication. Independent body mobility to sit, stoop, bend, and stand routinely. Ability to sit for prolonged periods and to perform keyboard and other office equipment tasks. Work in a confined office environment with changing priorities; handle emotional or hostile public calmly. Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
