Summary This position is located within the Diagnostic Imaging Services at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center. The incumbent serves as a Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist at the Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Education: Completion of a full‑time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post‑high school diagnostic radiologic technology program—evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other accrediting agencies recognized by the Department of Education. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology – Radiography (ARRT). Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on coverage described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable only to current VHA employees who meet the criteria). Retained Employees: Employees employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held. Transitional Provisions: For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements in this standard but met the qualifications applicable at the time of appointment: (1) DRTs requiring certification may be reassigned or promoted up to the full performance (journeyman) level; (2) DRTs that require a certification only at higher grade levels must meet the certification requirement before promotion; (3) DRTs appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended until they fully meet the basic requirements; (4) DRTs initially grandfathered must maintain the required credentials; (5) Employees retained under this provision who subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard for re‑entry. Experience: At least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level. Assignments: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist; for assignments above the full performance level, duties must constitute significant scope, complexity, and range and be performed at least 25% of the time. Role Scope: DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to assignments such as chief radiologic technologist at medical facilities with comprehensive and complex radiographic and imaging programs; employees in these assignments plan and direct the radiologic technology program at active, affiliated medical centers with critical care and emergent inpatient services. KSAs: Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities including: Ability to perform the full range of supervisory duties including assignment of work, performance evaluations, recommendations for appointments, promotions, disciplinary actions, and identification of continuing education needs. Ability to serve as a consultant to facility personnel in evaluating and planning radiologic technology services for complex cases. Ability to participate in research studies and/or consult with others conducting research. Ability to consult with staff and resident physicians through patient presentation, attending ward rounds, specialty clinics, and conferences. Ability to assess, plan, and evaluate the delivery of radiologic technology services at the facility. Preferred Experience: Prior experience as a modality (CT, US, MRI, IR, diagnostic X‑ray) supervisor or chief technologist; experience in radiology orders management; experience in employee and labor relations. Physical Requirements: Regular and recurring physical exertion; long periods of standing, walking, sitting; frequent bending, twisting, lifting; positioning patients; carrying or pushing moderately heavy objects. Duties Full responsibility for technical aspects and patient care functions within the General Radiology – CT – MRI – Ultrasound – and Interventional Radiology sections and supervisory responsibility over the staff in these sections (including direct reports of six first‑line section supervisors and one Lead technologist). Acts as second‑line supervisor for nonsupervisory diagnostic radiologic technologists and medical instrument technicians. Planning, organizing, and directing ongoing developments of the Radiology service; analyzing and evaluating clinical activities; coordinating short‑term and long‑term strategic planning. Nominating higher‑level review of VA0750 performance evaluations for technologist staff reporting to first‑line supervisors. Plans work schedules to ensure even flow and distribution of work; explains work requirements and assigns work on a daily and weekly basis, accounting for weekend and evening shifts; sets deadlines and priorities; develops operating instructions; identifies equipment requirements; recommends methods to improve work quality and productivity. Works independently within the framework of identified objectives and strategic planning for the Health Care System, Medical Center, and Imaging Service while striving to meet customer needs and supporting VA missions. Communicates and treats customers—Veterans, families, Veterans representatives, visitors, and VA staff—in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner; provides consistent information according to established policies and procedures; handles conflicts constructively. Provides age‑specific care appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, cultural, and chronological needs of patients, primarily between 18 and 80 years of age, including recent influx of younger and female veterans. Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 and applicable laws, regulations, and VA policy. Promotes a culture of safety for veterans, families, visitors, and employees; cooperates in patient safety improvement and reporting of potential events; implements and monitors OSHA life‑safety management, health, and environmental procedures; implements infection control practices (hand washing, universal precautions, isolation procedures, TB precautions).
