Job Overview The practice of ultrasonography is performed by an ultrasound technologist responsible for the administration of high‑frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. A Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner. Ultrasonography integrates scientific knowledge, technical skills, patient interaction, and compassionate care to provide diagnostic information. The Sonographer/Technologist recognizes patient conditions essential for the successful completion of a procedure, demonstrating an understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. The professional serves as the primary liaison between patients, practitioners, and the support team, maintaining sensitivity to the physical and emotional needs of patients through good communication, assessment, monitoring, and care. Participation in quality improvement processes and continuous assessment of performance is expected. The role requires critical thinking, independent professional judgment, and ongoing continuing education to enhance patient care and technical competence. Scope of Practice Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures or examinations upon the order of, or for diagnostic interpretation by, a licensed independent practitioner (LIP). Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest. Maintain records, respecting confidentiality and established policies. Apply principles of patient safety during all aspects of procedures, including assisting and transporting patients. Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient’s medical record. Corroborate patient’s clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is documented and available for use by a LIP. Verify informed consent. Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures. Prepare patients for procedures. Apply ALARA principles to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others. Perform venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a LIP when applicable. Start and maintain intravenous access per procedural protocol based on an imaging order for a LIP when applicable. Identify, prepare, and/or administer medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP when applicable. Evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded. Identify and manage emergency situations until an appropriate LIP, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives. Provide patient education related to imaging procedures. Educate, mentor, and oversee students and other learners in the environment. Participate in and/or perform ongoing quality assurance activities. Essential Job Statements Cardiac Sonographer/Technologists perform or assist the licensed independent practitioner in completing ultrasound imaging exams with minimal assistance. Complete imaging exams based on physician written orders, department protocols, and institutional safety standards. Represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Patient Population Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on the assigned unit. Assess patient status, interpret relevant information, and identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age and specific needs to provide equitable care as described in departmental policies and procedures. Age groups served: Infant (1‑12 months), Pediatrics (1‑12 years), Adolescents (13‑17 years), Adults (18‑64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older). Employment Qualifications Licensure, Certification, or Registration — Hire: Certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)] or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS). Licensure, Certification, or Registration — Continued Employment: Current certification by RDCS (ARDMS) or RCS or RCCS (CCI) and Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers). Experience required: 1 year as a Cardiac Sonographer/Technologist. Experience preferred: 3 years as a Cardiac Sonographer/Technologist and previous work experience in an academic medical center environment. Education required: Graduation from an allied health education program specific to sonography meeting certification requirements from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)] or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS); OR graduation from a CAAHEP or CMA accredited program in cardiac sonography; OR graduation from a minimum 2‑year JRC accredited program in Cardiac Sonography recognized by the ARRT or Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, JRC‑DMS; OR graduation from a bachelor’s degree program and hold at least one certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE and/or PE)] or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS). Education preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in cardiac sonography. Additional Position Requirements Shift rotation and schedules established with the specific manager or supervisor. Schedules, including shift rotations and hours of work, may be adjusted to meet staffing needs. Weekend and other after‑hours coverage may be required. Sonographer/Technologists are considered “Essential Employees” and may be required to report to work in accordance with the VCUHS Policy. Physical Requirements Lift 20‑50 lbs.
