Job Title: General Laborer – Rework Operator

Job Description

The General Laborer – Rework Operator plays a key role in warehouse operations by inspecting, repairing, and reworking steel tube and related materials that do not initially meet quality or shipping standards. You will begin on a first-shift training assignment in warehouse rework for approximately 1–3 months, depending on how quickly you master the tasks, and then transition to an assigned shift in either the warehouse or general production. This position directly supports product accuracy, quality, and on‑time delivery to customers in a fast-paced steel manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect steel tube and finished products for damage, defects, or other quality issues before shipment.
• Perform rework tasks such as grinding, deburring, labeling, banding, repainting, and repackaging steel products as needed.
• Remove or correct defective material to ensure only conforming product is shipped to customers.
• Use hand tools and basic power tools safely, accurately, and in accordance with work instructions.
• Utilize precision measuring tools and tape measures to verify dimensions and ensure products meet specifications.
• Assist with staging, sorting, and organizing material in the warehouse to support efficient workflow.
• Support general production activities, including unloading and handling materials, as required.
• Document rework activities accurately and communicate quality or production issues to supervisors in a timely manner.
• Follow detailed work instructions and quality control procedures to maintain consistent standards.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, and adhere to all safety rules and procedures.
• Collaborate with team members in warehouse, production, and quality functions to complete rework and meet production schedules.

Essential Skills

• Previous experience in manufacturing, warehouse, or rework environments preferred.
• Experience in quality control or inspection activities preferred.
• Previous experience using precision measuring tools and tape measures.
• Ability to perform visual inspections and identify defects or quality issues in steel products.
• Comfort working around steel products, tube mills, heavy machinery, and industrial equipment.
• Basic math and measurement skills to verify dimensions and interpret measurements accurately.
• Proficiency with hand tools and basic power tools used for grinding, deburring, banding, and packaging.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in a fast-paced environment.
• Manual dexterity and the ability to handle materials and tools safely and efficiently.
• Ability to follow written and verbal work instructions consistently.
• Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including standing for long periods and lifting heavy materials (50+ lbs).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous general production, unloading, or packaging experience.
• Background in warehouse operations, including staging, sorting, and organizing materials.
• Familiarity with industrial or steel manufacturing environments.
• Comfort working in areas with noise, dust, and temperature fluctuations, including colder conditions in winter.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with colleagues in Quality, Maintenance, Shipping, and other departments.
• Willingness to transition from training on first shift to an assigned shift in warehouse or general production.

Work Environment

This role is based in an industrial, high-speed steel manufacturing and warehouse environment, specifically in the warehouse area of an east building. You will train on first shift from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and then move to an assigned shift, which may include second shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The facility operates tube mills, heavy machinery, and material handling equipment, and work must be performed efficiently and safely under time-sensitive conditions. The job is physically demanding, requiring prolonged standing, frequent lifting of materials weighing 50 pounds or more, and regular exposure to noise, dust, and temperature fluctuations. Some areas, particularly shipping and receiving, can be cold and drafty during winter months. Teamwork is central to daily operations, with regular collaboration across departments such as Quality, Maintenance, and Shipping to meet production and shipping goals. Appropriate industrial work attire and safety footwear are expected to support safe and effective performance in this environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochelle, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.25 - $19.25/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
