Job Summary This posting will be used to fill two Laboratory Scientist 2 vacancies. MDH is seeking a Newborn Screening Laboratory Scientist 2 to carry out clinical chemistry and molecular biology assays for heritable and congenital disorders in newborn infants, interpret reports and results in the laboratory information management system (LIMS), maintain laboratory instrumentation, and troubleshoot analytical and instrumental problems. This position assists in meeting the goals of the program and applies advanced laboratory skills to analyze newborn dried blood spot specimens and evaluates newborn screening biochemical and molecular methods. Responsibilities include: Perform and monitor routine dried blood spot preparation, conduct laboratory analysis, and interpret and report results in the laboratory information management system (LIMS). Analyze screening data and interpret specimen results using established procedures while applying quality control protocols. Maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment and perform instrument calibrations. Troubleshoot instrument and testing problems and assist with validating and verification, as needed. MDH relies heavily on grant funding, in addition to state appropriated dollars. As an agency, we continually monitor funding levels and navigate some degree of uncertainty related to grant cycles and the impact of the grant funding on program priorities. This position is currently funded and approved to be filled. While the position is funded at this time, future funding is dependent on the continuation of our funding sources. The Minnesota Department of Health works proactively to sustain programs and maintain our workforce to avoid reductions in force to the very best of our ability. In the event of a loss of funding resulting in a necessary workforce reduction, that process is governed by our collective bargaining agreements and compensation plans. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held: Two (2) years of laboratory experience which must include performing sample preparation and analysis. Experience operating and/or maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation. CLIA Education Requirements are a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter college credits that include either: 1)24 semester/36 quarter credits in medical laboratory technology; or 2) 24 semester/36 quarter credits of science courses that include six semester/nine quarter credits in chemistry; six semester/nine quarter credits in biology; and twelve semester/eighteen quarter hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination. Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process: The ability to work independently and collaboratively to problem solve, and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Technical knowledge and proficiency of analytical methods. Knowledge of the theories and principles used in the analytical procedures performed. The ability to follow quality control procedures and protocols to ensure accuracy of tests using documented methods. Preferred Qualifications Experience with analytical reagent preparation, clinical specimen testing, and high throughput testing. Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting PC-based analytical instrumentation and the ability to perform validations and verifications of instruments and assays. Knowledge of chemical, biochemical, molecular, and/or clinical laboratory procedures as well as knowledge of college mathematics, algebra, and practical statistics and the ability to apply them to complex measurement techniques. Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). Bachelor's or advanced degree in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology. Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 30 pounds on a non‑repetitive basis. Ability to stand and/or walk for prolonged periods of time. Ability to perform repetitive tasks daily. Additional Requirements This position requires weekend and holiday work on a rotational schedule. Must successfully pass a background and reference check.
