Senior Accountant

My client is a Berlin-based technology start-up that has recently been acquired by a larger organization and is looking for an experienced Senior Accountant to strengthen and scale its finance function.

This is a permanent, hands‑on accounting role for someone who combines strong technical accounting expertise with a modern, digital mindset and a passion for process improvement. The successful candidate will take ownership of end‑to‑end accounting activities, support financial reporting under HGB and IFRS, improve automation across finance systems, and help create scalable processes to support future growth. The role offers significant ownership and visibility, working closely with the finance leadership team to professionalise and optimise the accounting function.

You will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial data, improving reporting capabilities, and providing the business with clear insights to support decision‑making.

Your Responsibilities

• Take ownership of end‑to‑end accounting activities, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and fixed asset accounting.
• Perform accurate account reconciliations and ensure high‑quality accounting records across multiple legal entities.
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with HGB (German GAAP) and IFRS.
• Support consolidation activities and prepare VAT returns.
• Identify and implement opportunities to automate and digitise accounting processes.
• Optimise interfaces between operational systems, DATEV, and other finance tools.
• Improve accounts payable and accounts receivable workflows through technology and process enhancements.
• Develop cost centre and cost unit accounting structures to improve financial transparency.
• Establish and monitor KPIs to support management reporting and decision‑making.
• Drive improvements to financial closing processes with the goal of achieving a faster and more efficient close.
• Work closely with teams such as Sales and Product to assess the financial impact of new features, partnerships, and business initiatives.
• Support the ongoing development of a scalable finance function within a growing technology business.

Desired Qualifications

• Several years of experience in accounting, ideally as a Senior Accountant, Accounting Lead, or similar role.
• Background in accounting or tax, with further qualification as a Certified Accountant (Bilanzbuchhalter/in) or equivalent professional qualification.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience, ideally within a growing SME, start‑up, or scale‑up environment.
• Experience independently managing accounting activities and owning finance processes end‑to‑end.
• Strong knowledge of HGB and IFRS accounting standards, consolidation, and financial reporting.
• Strong experience with DATEV, including DATEV Unternehmen Online, and digital invoice workflows.
• Advanced Excel skills with experience creating financial reports and analysis.
• Analytical mindset combined with a hands‑on, entrepreneurial approach.
• Ability to identify improvements, implement solutions, and work independently.
• Fluent German skills (C1 level) and professional English communication skills for an international working environment.

The salary range for this position is €60,000 - €80,000 - My client may be open to slightly higher salary expectations based on the candidate's experience.
