MECHANIC

Mechanic

The Stockton Port District is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Mechanic. This is a Journeyman-level classification, which under general supervision repairs heavy diesel, gas, hydraulic and other specialized equipment, including cranes. Note: Effective July 1, 2026 the hourly rate for this position will be $44.53.

Examples of Duties

• Repairs hydraulic systems on heavy equipment; performs tests and precision adjustments.
• Inspects diesel, gas, hydraulic, construction and other similar equipment in the field or shop.
• Disassembles and overhauls engines, differentials, transmissions, clutches, alternators, generators, starters, distributors, carburetors, steering mechanisms, brakes, hydraulic apparatus, and other assemblies.
• Inspects, repairs and overhauls cranes, trucks, forklifts, power shovels, tractors, air compressors, bulldozers, graders and other equipment.
• Tunes engines using testing equipment; sets tappets; replaces main and connects rod bearings; inspects and repairs automatic and standard transmissions, universal joints and differentials; relines and adjusts brakes.
• May perform welding and blacksmithing.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience:

• A minimum of four (4) years related experience at a Journeyman-level.

Certificates and Licenses:

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Class B driver's license with Hazard Materials and Tanker Endorsements.
• Medical clearance for respirator use.
• Must pass a background investigation and be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
