Our client is a well-established heavy civil construction company based near San Diego, CA, specializing in underground utilities, site development, and paving/grading projects. They are looking for a skilled Estimator to join their team and support their growing pipeline of public and private sector work. Position Overview The Heavy Civil / Underground Utility Estimator will be responsible for preparing detailed cost estimates, analyzing project plans and specifications, coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers, and supporting bid proposals for a range of civil construction projects. This role requires strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Key Responsibilities Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for: Underground utilities (gas, water, sewer, storm drain, etc.) Site development projects Paving and grading projects Review and interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications. Perform quantity takeoffs and develop cost breakdowns. Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field operations teams. Participate in bid reviews, strategy discussions, and value-engineering efforts. Support handoff meetings and assist the project team during project startup. Qualifications 5+ years of experience estimating in one or more of the following areas: Underground utilities Site development Paving and grading Strong understanding of civil construction means, methods, and production rates. Experience with estimating software (e.g., B2W, HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek) preferred. Candidates with combined experience as both an estimator and a project manager are strongly preferred. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously.
