POSITION Bus Aide LOCATION: Transportation REPORTS TO: Transportation Director FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt TERMS: 179-day position paid following the board-approved salary schedule JOB GOAL: To assist the bus driver in transporting students who have exceptionalities in a safe, efficient, and timely manner QUALIFICATIONS: Must pass a drug screening test as required by state and local policies. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama Statutes and State Board of Education regulations Knowledge of techniques and procedures used in working with students who have special needs Ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with children. Ability to communicate effectively and develop relationships with bus driver, parents, and school personnel. Ability to learn school bus rules, regulations, and safety procedures. Ability to secure students in a safe riding position and to reposition students as needed. Ability to learn First Aid and CPR. Ability to follow directions and work as a team. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Assist with safe loading and unloading of students. Enforce safety rules for students. Monitor student behavior. Administer to the individual needs of the students as required. Escort student to class or office if needed. Assist driver with keeping bus clean and with keeping needed supplies on the bus. Be familiar, if assigned to special education students, with each student's exceptionality. Be familiar, if assigned to special education students, with each student's physical needs. Assist, if assigned to special education students, with door-to-door loading and unloading, if needed. Ensure that students are secured (seatbelts, special seats, wheelchairs, and other) and monitor structures and/or equipment to assure safety. Learn evacuation procedures and assist students and driver as necessary. Interact appropriately with students. Follow all policies and laws governing transportation. Maintain familiarity with bus route to which assigned. Communicate effectively with the bus driver, supervisor, students, parents, and school staff using tact and good judgment. Follow attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules. Ensure adherence to good safety standards. Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Model and maintain high ethical standards. Demonstrate initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities. Maintain expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives. Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment. Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events. Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner. Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate. Exhibit interpersonal skills to work as an effective team member. Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities. Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement. Prepare all required reports and maintain all appropriate records. Participate in cross-training activities as required. Performs other duties as required by supervisor and system leadership. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force as needed to move objects. EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
