JOB SUMMARY
 
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Perioperative Services, and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. Assist physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures. These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the hospital, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies.

Classification : Non-exempt  
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
High School graduate or equivalent required. BLS Certification.
Certification as a Surgical Technologist preferred
Two years previous experience as an operating room technician desired



 
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE



 
Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
 

1. Decision making concerning equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization.
2. Bio hazardous waste disposal per institutional policy.
3. Housekeeping duties per OR housekeeping policies.
4. Patient care and patient flow.
5. Maintains patient confidentiality.
6. Creates a safe environment in which surgery may take place.
7. Uses medical equipment in a safe manner.
8. Helps provide cost effective patient care.
9. Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and hospital specific policies and procedures.
10. Provides physical safety for the patient.
11. Accounts for sponges, needles, instruments, and other potential foreign bodies.
12. Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases.
13. Pulls supplies for upcoming cases.
14. Demonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians.
15. Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards.
16. Demonstrates knowledge of Instrument Processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages utilizing Manufacturer’s instructions for use.
17. Adheres strictly to facility’s policy regarding Immediate Use Sterilization.
18. Checks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day.
19. Utilizes surgeon preference card to select packs, supplies and instruments.
20. Performs surgical hand scrub and dons sterile gown and gloves according to gowning and gloving policy.
21. Maintains proper sterile technique when gowning and gloving surgeon and draping patient.
22. Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts according to count policy.
23. Handles specimen per established policy.
24. Transports instruments to decontamination area utilizing appropriate technique and in compliance with established policies and procedures.
25. Puts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day.
26. Restocks operating rooms to established PAR levels.
27. Attends 100% of department meetings or documents review of materials presented.
28. Keeps supervisor apprised of work progress.
29. Comply with facility Standards of Behavior and complete all required education assignments within the designated timeline.

3. The employee must be able to lift and/or carry over 20 pounds on a regular basis and be able to push/pull over 25 pounds on a regular basis.
4. The employee must be able to stand and/or walk at least five hours per day.
