Job Summary The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. The MA delivers age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident per plan of care. The MA assists with basic health care needs including bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, and providing psycho-social support and other personal care. May assist residents in transferring, repositioning, walking, using transfer techniques and equipment, providing range of motion and passive exercises. Additionally, the MA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, assists with meals and snacks, and provides water and supplements as appropriate. The MA administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within state regulations, documents outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and diet, and communicates any changes or concerns to the charge nurse. The MA also collects non-invasive body fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, provides housekeeping and laundry services, assists with wellness and recreational programs, and encourages resident participation. Qualifications High school graduate or GED preferred (not required). Minimum age 18 preferred. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience preferred. Satisfactorily completes yearly department specific competency testing and maintains a record of continuing education credits. Minimum 12 hours continuing education annually based on state requirements. Maintains all required certifications. May need a valid driver's license and auto insurance. Iowa: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) mandatory, maintain with the State Board of Nursing. Complete a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course once CNA certified. Minnesota: Must have nursing assistant certification, complete a 75‑hour course and be registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, complete a state‑approved Trained Medication Assistant course. North Dakota: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) mandatory, maintain with the State Board of Nursing, complete a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Medication Assistant I certification required for assisted living or basic care facility; Medication Assistant II required for skilled nursing facility. South Dakota: Must successfully complete the state-approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course, maintain with the State Board of Nursing. Good Samaritan Society Locations: Must have the state-required certified/trained medication aide certification (CMA or TMA), with prior Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.
