Principal Engineer, Core Infrastructure

Salary: $142,000 - 194,000 per year Requirements:

• We are looking for a BS/MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
• We expect 6-10+ years of software engineering experience building highly available, scalable distributed systems or cloud infrastructure.
• Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Rust, C/C++, or a similar systems or backend language are required.
• Deep expertise in one or more core infrastructure areas is needed, such as distributed systems, cloud control planes, management planes, scheduling, virtualization, storage, networking, security, reliability, or platform automation.
• You should be able to independently lead the design and delivery of complex services that are correct, resilient, observable, and straightforward to operate.
• A strong understanding of failure handling, concurrency, asynchronous workflows, safe retries, and lifecycle management in distributed systems is important.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities are needed, including driving resolution for complex production and performance issues.
• Experience collaborating across teams and converting broad platform goals into clear designs and executable plans is required.
• You should be able to raise the technical bar through mentoring, design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on technical leadership.
• Minimum job qualifications also include 11 years of software development experience, or a relevant bachelors degree with 7 years of software development experience, or a masters degree with comparable experience.

• We lead the development and begin architecting components of scalable, elastic distributed systems.
• We define scalability requirements for owned components and ensure design and implementation expectations are met.
• We optimize code and data paths for high-throughput, hyper-scale workloads.
• We leverage data plane platforms for large-scale retrieval, storage, and processing.
• We design fault-tolerant, in-service upgradable systems using redundancy, replication, failover, and partition-handling policies.
• We apply load shedding, throttling, and rate limiting to manage network unreliability while meeting SLOs.
• We establish KPIs and telemetry, and build dashboards and alerts to monitor system health proactively.
• We design complex validation approaches such as fault injection and brownouts, along with replication and synchronization for correctness and durability.
• We proactively diagnose and resolve production issues, mentor peers, and support operational readiness.
• We implement security controls, carry out remediation, maintain compliance documentation, and develop IaC and automation for safe patching, updates, and rollbacks.
• We manage and coordinate moderately complex tasks, track timelines and deliverables, and adjust plans across multiple projects.
• We collaborate across the organization to align expectations and achieve shared goals.
• We identify and resolve moderately complex issues, escalating critical items when needed and documenting solution approaches.
• We pursue continuous learning, stay current on industry practices, coach junior team members, and share knowledge across teams.
• We contribute to process improvement efforts and participate in candidate interviews and hiring recommendations.
