General Summary of Position Responsible for the timely, courteous, and competent transportation of patients throughout the Washington Hospital Center complex via wheelchair, stretcher, or bed. Also transports specimens, equipment, supplies, messages, and parcels as designated. Performs a variety of other support services as needed to provide service excellence to patients, visitors, and hospital staff. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Transport patients and their personal possessions, medical records, and attached clinical devices (IVs and oxygen) by wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to and from various hospital locations and to the hospital entrance upon discharge. Ensure the safety of the patient during transport. Assist in lifting, positioning, and transferring patients to and from examination tables, operative tables, wheelchairs, stretchers, and beds. Provide lift and positioning assistance as assigned. Provide patients with gowns, pillows, blankets, etc. for comfort and support. Ensure patients have hospital identification band corresponding with name and date of birth (DOB) for the assigned transport. Wear appropriate protective clothing as needed. Document arrival and departure times and inform appropriate staff of patient destination location and/or time of arrival. Deliver and retrieve supplies, equipment, and records such as laboratory specimens/results, x‑ray film, unit supplies, medical charts, pharmacy products, parcels, and messages. Maintain transportation records including name of patient or material transported, pickup site, destination, and departure/arrival times. Note difficulties encountered and relay same to supervisor. Perform surgical clipping as requested. Weigh patients in preparation for their perioperative procedures. Escort patients in and out of perioperative areas to include waiting rooms, pre‑op, operative suites, and PACU. Prepare pre‑op and PACU bays for patients, i.e., clean stretchers and equipment, make stretchers with linen stock bay with needed supplies. Assemble gown packs. Clean equipment, stretchers, beds, monitors, etc. Perform daily tasks in assigned area: temperature logs, stocking supplies, trash removal, removal of used gas cylinders, restocking gas cylinders, retrieving clean linen, removal of soiled linen, stocking nutrition items, returning food trays, return and restocking of IV pumps/CAD pumps, etc. Inspect transportation equipment for damage and/or defects. Clean transportation equipment by wiping surfaces with pre‑mixed cleaning solutions. Report damaged or malfunctioning transport equipment as required. Empty and replace glove boxes, refill oxygen tanks, and disconnect/reconnect to patient according to established guidelines. May be required to restrain patients by holding or strapping with appropriate constraints. Complete transports quickly and efficiently; immediately notify dispatcher or supervisor when assignments are initiated, completed, and when paged by a dispatcher. Respond to various codes called throughout the MWHC campus. Minimal Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required. May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training. Experience 6 to 12 months experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Licenses and Certifications CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required. Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Should be able to work independently. Requires the ability to read and write in English and comprehend policies and procedures; knowledge of grammar and arithmetic including fractions and decimals; and ability to use alphanumeric pager and telephone. May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (e.g., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, online printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff or tables); preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records, and related data; basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
