- Prepare steel for welding by cleaning edges, grinding as needed, squaring parts, and tacking components in place.
- Set up welding machines, selecting appropriate wire, gas, and settings for MIG, flux core, and metal core welding based on material thickness and position.
- Perform MIG, flux core, and metal core welding on structural steel to produce strong, clean, and consistent welds that meet visual and nondestructive testing requirements.
- Make welds that pass visual inspection, x-ray, or other nondestructive testing as required by job specifications and codes.

- Torch cut, gouge, grind, and tack weld components accurately as part of the fabrication process.
- Safely operate overhead cranes to move and position steel parts and assemblies.
- Review completed work for defects such as gaps, holes, porosity, undercut, or lack of fusion and correct issues before sending parts to the next step.
- Label and document completed parts and move them to subsequent processes such as machining, coating, or shipping.
- Follow all work instructions and job travelers provided by production supervision and quality control inspectors.
- Practice and participate in Lean Manufacturing initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance workflow.
- Use shop technology, including iPads and barcode tracking systems, to access drawings, record work, and follow production processes.
- Perform daily safety checks, including putting on PPE, inspecting welding equipment, leads, ground connections, gas supply, and keeping the work area clean and organized.

- Experience with metal core welding processes on steel or metal parts.
- Capability to produce welds that meet AWS code requirements and pass MIG steel weld tests, including flux core, hard wire, and metal core tests.
- Strong fabrication skills in structural steel, including layout, fitting, and assembly of beams, columns, embeds, stairs, railings, platforms, and similar items.
- Ability to measure accurately and verify that parts match the blueprint before welding.
- Skill in torch cutting, gouging, grinding, and tack welding with precision.
- Ability to safely operate overhead cranes to move and position steel components.
- Comfort using technology such as iPads and barcode tracking systems in a production environment.
- Solid understanding of what constitutes a good weld, with the ability to identify and correct issues such as porosity, undercut, lack of fusion, burn-through, and warping.
- Commitment to working safely and following established safety policies and procedures.
- Willingness to work on-site and be open to additional hours as workload requires.
- Graduation from a welding school or formal training program in flux core, MIG, or structural welding is highly valued.
- Prior fabrication experience in structural steel or metal work is a significant plus and may influence starting level.
- Experience working in a large structural steel fabrication shop or similar industrial environment.
- Familiarity with AISC and AWS standards and quality expectations in structural steel fabrication.
- Comfort working with automated CNC equipment, modern welding and fit-up stations, and overhead cranes.
- Ability to participate in and support Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality, documented work.
- Ability to work collaboratively with fitters, machine operators, and inspectors to complete jobs correctly the first time.
