About the Division of Youth Services The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non-residential services that encompass juvenile detention, commitment, and parole. DYS operates fifteen secure facilities serving youth ages 10-21, and contracts with private service providers throughout the state. DYS also administers juvenile parole services and oversees the Colorado Youth Detention Continuum. Position Overview The Social Worker/Counselor IV is the Behavioral Health Lead for Prairie Vista Youth Services Center and serves as the Youth Center Training Officer (YCTO) for Behavioral Health Services. The role provides oversight for substance use psychoeducation, internship, and practicum programs, and delivers individual and group therapeutic interventions for youth with complex mental health, trauma, and substance use concerns. The position is located at Prairie Vista and requires full-time in-person service delivery unless otherwise approved. Summary of Duties Within the first seven days, assess youth’s mental health needs by reviewing files and making initial and collateral contacts. Maintain a caseload and oversee assigned Behavioral Health Specialists. Conduct individual, group, and family therapeutic interventions using evidence‑based treatment theories and curricula. Provide counseling in accordance with DORA standards and the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health (OCFMH) expectations. Deliver therapeutic services for substance use, psychoeducation, mental health issues, trauma, cognitive limitations, sensory integration, and offense‑specific services. Apply a strengths‑based, trauma‑informed, systems‑theory approach considering cultural, religious, and sexual identity factors. Document and evaluate intervention effectiveness and adjust treatment plans accordingly. Collaborate with medical and psychiatric teams regarding psychotropic medication; collaborate with primary BHS on medication assessment. Develop wrap‑around transition and aftercare services for youth nearing parole or discharge. Coordinate with educational and vocational systems to provide academic services and ensure consistent behavior interventions in school. Identify and utilize additional resources to optimize treatment based on developmental and neurocognitive capacity. Facilitate daily groups, assess progress, and document all services in the electronic record system by the next business day. Document summary of progress in monthly treatment plans and all related reports. Communicate progress and barriers effectively to families, staff, and external partners. Training and Supervision Supervise training components including the Behavioral Program (level system), Chronic Disease Protocol, Substance Use, Mental Health, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma‑Responsive environments, Practicum, and Internship program. Develop and conduct training for milieu staff and Behavioral Health Specialists. Provide oversight for interns and conduct performance evaluations. Recommend and evaluate treatment cases based on advanced practice principles. Provide consultation to direct‑care staff to maintain a trauma‑informed environment. Minimum Qualifications Current, valid Colorado or state license participating in the Social Work Licensure Compact as one of the following: Licensed Social Worker (LSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC). Two (2) years of experience with current, valid licensure in a state participating in the Social Work Licensure Compact. For supervisory positions, licensure that meets legal requirements to perform supervisory responsibilities. Preferred Qualifications Relatable experience as a current or prior State of Colorado employee. Conditions of Employment Minimum age 21; no felony convictions or history of domestic violence. Full background and reference check required. State of Colorado residency required at the time of application and throughout employment. Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and valid, non‑restricted Colorado driver’s license required. Successful completion of the DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and mandatory annual training in all subject areas is required for continued employment. Travel to assigned trainings and alternate work sites may be required. Compliance with the Diana Sexual Risk Screening tool is required for positions of trust with children and teens. Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned must disclose and explain such actions on the application; failure to provide required information may disqualify the applicant from future State employment.
