Military Family Life Counselor

Position Overview This position supports the Child & Youth associated with NAS Patuxent River in Maryland. Candidates must be local to the installation or willing to relocate to become local. Candidates must be licensed at the independent practice level as a Social Worker (LCSW-C), Therapist (LCMFT), Mental Health Counselor (LCPC), or Psychologist. Responsibilities Provide full breadth of Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages of military service members and their families at military installations, including civilian expeditionary workforce and families. Deliver non‑medical counseling, training/health and wellness presentations, consult with parents, personnel at child development centers, and consult to installation command regarding behavioral health issues affecting children and youth. Serve at child development centers, youth programs, summer camps, and on‑demand assignments, working closely with installation and military branch points of contact (POC) to ensure programs meet needs. Provide short‑term, solution‑focused counseling: assessment, brief counseling, action planning, referral to resources, and follow‑up. Support staff and personnel of child development centers, youth programs, and summer camps, including parent support, training, and guidance. Offer training and health‑and‑wellness presentations; participate in health fairs and other base/installation activities focused on children and youth. Enter counselor activity data daily via smartphone or web application, ensuring accurate reporting and confidentiality. Establish and maintain relationships with community resources focused on children and youth, providing appropriate linkages. Maintain visibility within assigned locations to ensure services are accessible. Abide by line‑of‑sight protocol when working with children. Partner with POC to tailor services to installation needs and develop professional relationships. Manage duty‑to‑warn and restricted reporting per Department of Defense protocol; staff cases with regional supervisors and directors. Communicate with regional supervisors, participate in supervision, and share trends/issues on installations. Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of the Secretary of Defense program manager. Flex schedule to respond to urgent requests or at the request of a regional supervisor or director. Participate in in‑services, quality‑improvement committees, studies, pilot programs, and other contract activities; complete documentation and integrate pilot activities with technology. Perform all other duties as assigned. Qualifications Master’s Degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental‑health related field. Valid unrestricted independent counseling license (LCSW-C, LCMFT, LCPC, or Psychologist) from a state, DC, U.S. territory, or Commonwealth. Minimum two years of post‑license clinical experience. Intermediate‑level competencies in technology and software (Microsoft Office, internet navigation, smartphone/tablet app navigation, video‑conferencing). Ability to engage and communicate with military members or children in any physical location on an installation or school setting, including rapid movement across base, indoors and outdoors. Ability to comply with site‑specific requirements such as immunizations and record submission. U.S. citizenship and fluency in English. Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for children, service members, and families. Capability to build trusting, helping relationships and work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Pass CNACI clearance, Installation Records Check (IRC), Criminal History Background Check, and FBI fingerprints check. Vehicle operator’s license; may also require a U.S. military vehicle operator permit for TDY locations if necessary. Meet Magellan MFLC CYB criteria for experience with children and youth and specialty in child and adolescent development or psychology. School‑assigned counselors must have prior experience functioning in a school setting. Willingness to relocate to or be local at NAS Patuxent River; or ability to relocate if not already local. Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $59,922 – $100,280, based on national data and local cost factors. Additional short‑term incentives may apply.
