Dialysis Technician I

Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse or Physician, initiates and discontinues dialysis. The Technician Dialysis I also assists with ancillary duties as directed.

Responsibilities

• Adheres to dress code, mission statement, policies and procedures, time and attendance guidelines.
• Assumes clerical duties and assists with transportation as needed.
• Participates in quality improvement activities.
• Promotes patient safety by ensuring patients are properly identified with name band, uses fall precautions when needed, responds immediately to all alarms and monitors patients according to policy when in restraints.
• Maintains patient confidentiality and acts in an ethical manner at all times.
• Documents on treatment record appropriate patient information (Accuchecks, Vital Signs, Dialysis settings, venous pressures, goal, UFR, Weight, volume removed, and all care provided).
• Initiates, monitors, terminates, and troubleshoots dialysis treatments in the chronic setting.
• Assesses dialysis access for patency and signs of infection.
• Performs vein puncture prior to dialysis.
• Monitors dialysis equipment and reports malfunctions to proper areas.
• Cleans equipment per infection control procedures.
• Performs work under direction of RN or Charge Nurse.
• Charts procedures performed, vital signs, and patient assignment.
• Obtains permission from Charge Nurse and notifies primary RN prior to leaving unit for any reason.
• Offers assistance to other staff members as time permits or as delegated by RN.
• Keeps RN informed of patient's status and reports changes immediately.
• Cares for patients and family members in a kind and compassionate manner. Supports all customer service goals and programs.
• Assists in maintaining clean work environment.
• Picks up and delivers supplies/equipment as assigned.
• Transports assigned patients as needed.
• Assists with maintaining department stock.
• Assists with moving and lifting patients.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by management within job scope.

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.

Required Licensure/Certifications:

• BLS Certification (American Heart Association)
• Dialysis Technician Certification (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved state certification program or a national commercially available certification program) required within 18 months of hire or transfer into the position.
• EMT licensure may be substituted for two years of clinical dialysis experience

Required Experience: Two (2) years clinical dialysis experience.

1. Ability to function in a high-volume, stressful patient care environment utilizing.

2. Excellent customer service and communication skills.

Age of Patients Served: Adult (18-64 years) Geriatric (=>65 years)
