Job Description

The Building Maintenance Technician supports the overall upkeep, safety, and cleanliness of the facilities by performing basic maintenance, grounds care, event setup, and custodial tasks. This role ensures that all spaces are well-maintained, functional, and ready for services, meetings, and events, while responding promptly to work orders and facility concerns.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, addressing minor repairs, and promptly reporting facility issues.
• Assist with repairs and preventative maintenance tasks across the facility to ensure safe and reliable operation of building systems.
• Receive, manage, and complete assigned work orders through the FMX system, providing regular updates on task status and completion.
• Respond in a timely manner to all assigned requests and ensure accurate documentation of work performed.
• Support grounds and exterior maintenance, including trash pickup and general outdoor cleanliness.
• Assist with seasonal exterior tasks such as snow and ice removal as directed.
• Help with opening and closing buildings according to schedules, ensuring spaces are secure and in good condition after use.
• Provide general facilities support to staff and ministry leaders as needed.
• Assist with event setup and breakdown for services, meetings, and events, including arranging tables, chairs, and basic equipment according to instructions.
• Reset rooms to their standard layout after use to maintain consistency and readiness for future activities.
• Support cleaning and custodial duties for all interior spaces, including the sanctuary, parish hall, classrooms, offices, and restrooms.
• Restock cleaning supplies and restroom materials as needed to ensure all areas remain well supplied and presentable.

Essential Skills

• Basic maintenance skills across multiple trades, including HVAC, plumbing, drywall, carpentry, painting, flooring, and basic electrical work.
• Ability to perform physical tasks, including regularly lifting and moving items weighing up to 25–50 pounds.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete work orders accurately through the FMX system.
• Strong attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness, safety, and proper room setup.
• Reliability in responding promptly to facility concerns and work order requests.
• Flexibility to work a schedule that accommodates special events and church programming.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in facilities maintenance or custodial roles is beneficial.
• Comfort working in a faith-based environment and supporting a variety of services, meetings, and events.
• Strong communication skills to coordinate effectively with staff and ministry leaders.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a busy facility setting.
• Basic familiarity with work order or maintenance management systems such as FMX is a plus.

Work Environment

This role is based in a church setting that includes a sanctuary, parish hall, classrooms, offices, restrooms, and outdoor grounds. The environment involves regular movement throughout the facility and grounds, performing physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and setting up furniture and equipment. The position requires flexibility to support services, meetings, and special events, which may occur outside standard business hours. Parking is limited, and the site is located only a block away from a Metro station, making public transportation a convenient option for commuting. Attire should be practical and appropriate for hands-on maintenance and custodial work in a public, community-oriented facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.44/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Washington,DC.
