Perfusionist, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is a Level 1 Trauma Center with 914 beds, serving the Dallas metroplex area. The Perfusion department is growing and relocation assistance is available. Job Summary The Perfusionist provides patient care by operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during surgeries and other medical situations requiring cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory support. The role involves selecting appropriate equipment, monitoring patient conditions, administering drugs and solutions, and ensuring safe, effective procedures under physician supervision. Essential Functions Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and staff fully informed. Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment and correct setup and breakdown of sterile and non‑sterile equipment. Monitors cell saver and operates the heart‑lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac‑assist devices. Mixes and administers drugs and solutions required for extracorporeal circulation in accordance with industry best practices and established policies. Adjusts gas flow and mixtures, administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit to achieve safe and effective procedures. Records relevant perfusion information during surgery, analyzes, and maintains records after surgery. Performs quality control and preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment, and maintains inventory of equipment and supplies. Key Success Factors Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, and biology. Knowledge of cardiac diseases, defects, and congenital anomalies. Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies for adult, pediatric, and infant patients. Knowledge of blood components, plasma composition, and use of blood products in extracorporeal support. Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written protocols. Ability to communicate clearly during operation of extracorporeal support devices. Ability to learn and apply regulatory and accreditation standards and protocols. Ability to work cooperatively within a team approach to patient care. Ability to remain calm and react appropriately in stressful situations. Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited perfusion program. 1–2 years of intermediate level perfusion experience preferred. Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) – Texas Medical Board, required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or BLS within 30 days of hire.
