Registered Nurse Operating Room

Job Summary:


The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room is responsible for providing specialized perioperative nursing care across a broad range of surgical specialties including ortho-total joint and trauma, neuro, gynecology/urology, vascular, and thoracic procedures. The role demands proficiency in patient assessments, medication administration, phlebotomy, IV placement, and collaboration with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes. Strong communication skills and at least three years of experience are required, with an emphasis on diverse surgical competencies and adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care during preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases.
• Perform patient assessments, medication administration, and treatment planning specific to surgical patients.
• Maintain competency in phlebotomy and intravenous (IV) placement.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and support staff.
• Ensure compliance with infection control, fire safety, laser safety, and radiation safety protocols.
• Administer blood and blood products as required.
• Handle and label surgical specimens accurately.
• Implement Universal Protocol including time-out procedures to ensure patient safety.
• Manage urinary bladder catheterization and other specialized nursing procedures.
• Respond to code situations and emergencies within the unit.
• Utilize EPIC electronic medical record system for documentation and communication.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Competency in phlebotomy and IV placement.
• Proficiency in a wide range of surgical procedures including orthopedic, neuro, gynecological, vascular, thoracic, and others listed.
• BLS certification.
• Knowledge of infection control, blood administration, fire safety, laser safety, radiation safety, and specimen handling.
• Experience with EPIC electronic health record system preferred.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with Da Vinci Xi Surgical System.
• Familiarity with diverse surgical blocks including ortho-total joint and trauma, neuro, GYN/Urology, vascular, and thoracic surgeries.
• Additional certifications or training in specialty surgical areas.

Special Considerations:

• Call required for this position.
• Minimal return-to-office restrictions.
• Block scheduling may be accommodated but is not guaranteed.
• Local candidates within 75 miles preferred; no acceptance of pending licenses.
• Scrubs color designated as teal.
• First-time travelers not accepted for this unit.

Scheduling:

• Shift patterns and schedules are determined by unit needs and may include block scheduling attempts.
• Work hours align with operating room case schedules and call requirements.
