Position Overview

The Division of Classical Hematology, part of the Department of Medicine, is on the lookout for a distinguished candidate dedicated to a full-time academic career in classical hematology. This role encompasses both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities at our medical center, focusing on classical hematology. For candidates interested in research, our organization provides access to the esteemed Pittsburgh Heart, Lung, and Blood Vascular Medicine Institute, led by Dr. Stephen Y. Chan, MD, PhD. This institute offers a unique environment for hematologists aiming to enhance patient care and engage in basic, translational, and clinical research. Physicians will have the chance to partake in pioneering translational studies, investigator-led clinical trials, and multidisciplinary initiatives focusing on:

  • Thrombosis and hemostasis
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Cardio-oncology
  • Vascular complications related to cancer and its treatments

Our faculty members benefit from outstanding research infrastructure, numerous NIH- and foundation-funded programs, a NIH-supported T32 post-doctoral training grant, and a diverse patient population across Western Pennsylvania and beyond. We foster a culture that encourages innovation, mentorship, and professional growth.

Candidate Profile

The ideal applicant should exhibit excellence in patient care and possess a keen interest in an academic setting that offers remarkable opportunities for clinical practice, teaching, and research. There are ample chances for interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching across all levels of medical education. Additionally, competitive start-up packages are available to support early and mid-career researchers.

Qualifications

Applicants must be eligible for or certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Hematology or Hematology-Oncology. The faculty member will be expected to engage in the education and training of Hematology and Medical Oncology fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as contribute to the Division's annual Scientific Conferences. Our combined fellowship program with the Division of Hematology-Oncology has a strong history of training fellows who have successfully transitioned into full-time academic roles and leadership positions in biotechnology firms.

Clinical Responsibilities

Clinical duties will involve participating in the inpatient hematology consultation service and the outpatient non-malignant hematology clinic at our medical center, as well as at the federally-funded Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania, which offers access to a wide range of clinical resources and advanced diagnostic tools.

Compensation and Application Process
