Position Summary The Emergency Room Tech assists and supports the nursing and medical staff of the Emergency Department to perform patient care and environmental tasks, and manage supplies and equipment to ensure the patient-focused, cost-effective operation of the department. The Tech also assists the RN with performing education, observing chemical tests on patients or control specimens, and records appropriate results while correctly using and maintaining all laboratory equipment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assist the RNs and physicians in providing technical care of the patients by documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy and IV starts, performing EKGs, transporting patients, placing patients on cardiac and vital sign monitors, performing point‑of‑care testing, wound care, and obtaining lab specimens, and documenting all care/procedures provided. Perform urine drug screens and/or breathalyzer tests as required or trained. Assist the physician with physical exams, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Apply orthopedic splints and fit patients for crutches. Ensure that patient care areas, storage rooms, and equipment are clean and maintained. Clean equipment and workspace including patient rooms, restrooms, waiting room, and nurse’s station. Ensure sufficient lab supplies, linens, and stock room supplies. Assist with unloading supplies into the Emergency Center. Perform POC and QC lab testing. Perform daily checks of ABC equipment in each room. Maintain temperature logs in pharmacy and labs. Replace sharps containers. Report equipment malfunctions for repair. Perform patient care as directed by nursing or medical staff, documenting on the medical record. Ensure an adequate supply of equipment for patient care, including stocking items such as linens, wall mounts, thermometer probes, otoscope probes, drawers, vital sign machines, IV carts, ortho carts, urine cups and wipes, triage wound supplies, nourishment counter items, and refrigerators. Perform quality‑control procedures and maintain records of these checks. Calibrate equipment in compliance with manufacturer’s requirements. Ensure proficiency‑testing specimens are performed at each center in compliance with policy. Oversee documentation of temperature/humidity checks. Monitor appropriate send‑out lab procedures. Maintain current policies and procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation; remain informed on all current technologies. Maintain inventory of necessary supplies and submit orders for restocking as needed. Demonstrate the values of the team concept consistently. Interact professionally with all department members, physicians, staff, administration, and the Director of Clinical Laboratory. Document correct information for compliance purposes. Remain knowledgeable about appropriate testing procedures. Perform daily opening and closing duties as assigned. Perform other duties as assigned. Safety / Infection Control Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to safety, emergency preparedness, infection control, OSHA, fire safety, and hazardous‑materials regulations and ER policies. ER Policy Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance. Wear ER identification at all times. Attend all ER required meetings and in‑service education. Remain flexible in staffing patterns and resolve staffing conflicts; participate in temporary assignments. Comply with attendance standards. Show flexibility when changes in assignments are necessary. Qualifications Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent. 1‑3 years’ experience in an Emergency Room setting or 1‑3 years’ experience as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT‑P or equivalent) required. Certificates / Licenses Current Emergency Medical Technician certification (or equivalent) preferred. Physical Demands Requires visual acuity to inspect and analyze work close to the eyes and hearing ability with or without correction; capable of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, lifting, and exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily tasks primarily of an administrative nature. Requires adequate vision, hearing, and repetitive motion skills. Ability to ascend or descend stairs, ramps, and similar surfaces using feet, legs, and/or hands and arms. Substantial repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movements; bending legs downward and forward. Ability to stand for sustained periods. Use of upper extremities to exert force in operations such as drawing, dragging, hauling, or tugging objects in a sustained motion. Ability to raise objects from lower to higher positions or move objects horizontally. Work Environment Well‑lighted, heated, and/or air‑conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation.
