Position Summary
The Bus Mechanic II (Certified Bus Mechanic) is the advanced, certified level within the District's bus mechanic career progression. The position independently performs advanced and complex maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on District school buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, grounds maintenance equipment, and other fleet vehicles and equipment.
The position diagnoses complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computerized vehicle systems; performs major and safety-critical repairs; conducts required vehicle and school bus inspections; and evaluates vehicle safety and operational readiness in accordance with District, state, and federal requirements. The position exercises advanced technical judgment and works with a high degree of independence.
Serves as a technical resource to Bus Mechanic I employees and other Transportation staff by providing technical guidance related to diagnostics, repair procedures, inspections, and skill development. The position does not have formal supervisory responsibility unless specifically assigned.
Essential Job Functions
- Independently performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on District school buses, trucks, vans, automobiles, trailers, grounds maintenance equipment, and other fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Determines appropriate diagnostic and repair approaches for complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, air brake, drivetrain, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Performs advanced troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of complex and major vehicle and equipment systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and applicable District, state, and federal requirements.
- Utilizes computerized and electronic diagnostic equipment to identify vehicle faults, determine appropriate repairs, and verify completed repairs.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals, manufacturer service information, electrical schematics, diagnostic data, specifications, and repair procedures to diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment systems.
- Performs required school bus and vehicle inspections in accordance with District procedures and applicable state and regulatory requirements.
- Evaluates vehicle and equipment condition, identifies safety-critical defects, determines required corrective action, and determines whether vehicles and equipment are safe for return to service.
- Troubleshoots, services, and repairs hydraulic and air brake systems and other safety-critical vehicle systems.
- Responds to road and emergency service calls involving disabled or malfunctioning District vehicles and equipment, including during adverse weather and other challenging conditions.
- Prioritizes and coordinates repair activities based on safety, operational needs, vehicle availability, and service requirements to minimize disruptions to Transportation operations.
- Completes work orders and maintains accurate records of inspections, diagnostics, repairs, labor, parts, materials, and vehicle and equipment condition in the District's computerized maintenance management system.
- Coordinates with fleet maintenance staff and the Transportation parts purchaser to identify parts and materials needed for repairs and support appropriate inventory levels.
- Provides technical guidance to Bus Mechanic I employees and other Transportation staff regarding diagnostics, repair procedures, inspections, troubleshooting, and safe work practices.
- Demonstrates and provides technical assistance related to maintenance, repair, diagnostic, inspection, and safety procedures.
- Provides technical assistance to school bus drivers, vehicle operators, and other Transportation staff regarding vehicle operation and mechanical concerns.
- Maintains tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, organized, and professional condition.
- Maintains required licenses, certifications, and inspection credentials and remains current on applicable technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborates with mechanics, drivers, equipment operators, supervisors, vendors, and other District staff to support safe and reliable fleet operations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Advanced principles and practices of vehicle maintenance, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Gasoline and diesel engines and heavy-duty vehicle systems.
- School buses, trucks, automobiles, trailers, grounds maintenance equipment, and other fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, air brake, braking, steering, suspension, drivetrain, transmission, and computerized vehicle systems.
- School bus and vehicle inspection procedures and applicable District, state, and federal safety and inspection requirements.
- Manufacturer specifications, technical service information, repair procedures, electrical schematics, and diagnostic information.
- Computerized and electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment and computerized maintenance management systems.
- Hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and equipment used in fleet maintenance and repair.
- Safe vehicle maintenance, repair, inspection, and shop practices.
Skill in:
- Diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, air brake, drivetrain, and computerized vehicle systems.
- Performing advanced troubleshooting and determining appropriate diagnostic and repair approaches.
- Performing major and safety-critical vehicle and equipment repairs.
- Using computerized and electronic diagnostic equipment to identify faults and verify repairs.
- Performing required school bus and vehicle inspections.

- Respond effectively to emergency service calls and changing operational conditions.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with mechanics, drivers, operators, supervisors, vendors, and other District staff.
