We are looking for a Lead Research Microbiologist - Molecular in 3600 Eagle Nest Dr, Crete, IL 60417 USA. Your mission will be to:

Position Summary

The incumbent performs multi-step tests related to the molecular laboratory services and maintains process documentation to facilitate microbiological and molecular biology analysis procedures and supports study design, execution, and training in the molecular department

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Perform rapid method tests as well as multi-step tests such as gene sequencing, DNA subtyping analysis, real-time PCR methods, and next generation sequencing.
• Lead and organize testing schedules and inventory to ensure due dates are met. Communicates with customer care representative for delivering results and vendors for troubleshooting results or equipment issues.
• Verify results before release to the clients. Read and record analysis data to produce a report for the client. Correct any discrepancies that occur. Perform literature searches as necessary to investigate and understand results. Perform calculations and input results as requested. Interpretation and release of results may be done in specific instances. Maintain knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that is required to complete job responsibilities.
• Review and maintain accurate quality control documentation of analysis procedures. Update and review logbooks, transfer data, and maintain records.
• Train analysts where required and participate in the training program.
• Maintain laboratory as it relates to testing, housekeeping and inventory. Perform necessary housekeeping duties in a timely manner, keeping the work areas and equipment clean and sanitized. Perform standard maintenance for key pieces of equipment. Perform cleaning protocols for GMP and ISO 17025 laboratory work space. Perform necessary tasks related to quality control parameters for the function being performed.
• Support study design and validation of new methods or tests as necessary. Participate in client calls to understand and/or review studies as necessary.
• Assume supervisory duties in absence of supervisor.
• Support laboratory management and corporate quality in the implementation, maintenance, and improvement of the management system. This position has the responsibilities and authority to identify departures from the management system or test procedures and document such observations in accordance with the prescribed non-conforming system and notifies the supervisor.
• Coordinate with other department personnel to maintain smooth flow of work.
• Adhere to all safety policies.
• Other related duties as assigned.
• At any time, the incumbent must behave and operate in an ethical and Code of Conduct compliant manner.

Communication

• Direct Supervisor: Reports to Research Project Leader/Manager/Director. Regularly communicates for guidance, performance feedback, and project updates.
• Team Members: Collaborates with team members in the Molecular Department to ensure effective execution of tasks, exchange of information, and teamwork in daily operations.
• Cross-Functional Teams: Maintains regular interaction with cross-functional teams such as Research & Development and Quality, fostering interdepartmental collaboration for successful project execution.
• Clients/Customers: Regularly communicates with clients to discuss service needs, project timelines, and ensure client satisfaction. Represents the company in client meetings and provides excellent customer service.
• Vendors/Suppliers: Liaises with vendors/suppliers for troubleshooting or status of orders/reagents needed for testing.

YOUR PROFILE

Qualifications Required

• Masters level degree in molecular biology or related field or 5+ years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory.
• The incumbent must have a general knowledge of molecular microbiology to accurately perform testing procedures and obtain the correct results.
• A basic knowledge of food science is necessary to analyze the microbiological content of a sample.
• A broad knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and policies is necessary to ensure a safe working environment.
• Independent analytical and troubleshooting skills are necessary to complete analysis procedures.
• Physical dexterity with micropipetting is required to transfer sample into plates and tubes.
• Laboratory skills obtained as a laboratory technician or similar position are essential to perform the necessary analyses.
• Oral and written communication skills are necessary to effectively communicate with cross-departmental teams and convey information though emails or scientific reports.
• Organizational and planning skills are necessary to ensure that analysis is completed within the specified time period.

Qualifications Desired

• Prior experience training laboratory personnel
• Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to complete job responsibilities
• General microbiology experience is helpful in determining growth conditions of microorganisms

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Demands:

• Frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to handle or manipulate laboratory equipment.
• Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Requires fine motor skills and dexterity for handling small instruments and conducting detailed work.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

• Work is conducted in a laboratory setting with exposure to chemicals, biological agents, and hazardous materials.
• Must follow strict safety guidelines and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Moderate noise levels and potential exposure to infectious agents.
• Regular cleaning and sterilization of workspaces required.

Travel

• Minimal travel is required, primarily for industry conferences or collaborative research meetings.
• Travel is typically less than 10% of the time

Compensation Range: $60,000 - $70,000/annual
