Position summary:

The position will be responsible for all aspects of railcar repair and maintenance. Duties include but are not limited to: Installation, repair, and maintenance of mechanical regulating and controlling devices, safety, and flow valves. Operation of machinery needed to wash/clean railcars and railcar parts to remove impurities. Forklift operation and proper unloading, weighing, and documentation of various commodities may also be required. The person must be able to read and understand blueprints, make car repairs in compliance with FRA & AAR rules and keep good repair records.

Tasks:

• Travel when needed to perform mobile railcar repairs.
• Connect regulators to test stands and turn screw adjustments until gauges indicate that inlet and outlet pressures meet specifications.
• Record maintenance information, including test results, material usage, and repairs made.
• Disconnect and/or remove defective or unauthorized valves, using hand tools.
• Lubricate wearing surfaces of mechanical parts, using oils or other lubricants.
• Disassemble and repair mechanical control devices or valves, such as safety valves, XS flow valves, heater coils, or bottom outlet valves, using power tools, hand tools, and cutting torches.
• Turn valves to allow measured amounts of air or gas to pass through gauges at specified flow rates.
• Examine valves parts for defects, dents, or loose attachments, and mark malfunctioning areas of defective units.
• Test valves and gauges for leaks and accurate temperature and pressure settings, using precision testing equipment.
• Attach air hoses to valve connections; then plug outlets and observe gauges for pressure losses to test internal seams for leaks.
• Replace defective parts, such as ball valves, ruptured disks, and safety valves, and reassemble units according to customer specifications using hand tools.
• Drain, clean, and refill machines or tanks at designated intervals, using cleaning solutions or water.
• Add specified amounts of chemicals to equipment at required times to maintain solution levels and concentrations.
• Measure, weigh, or mix cleaning solutions, using measuring tanks, calibrated rods or suction tubes.
• Operate or tend machines to wash and remove impurities from inbound railcars to prepare them for repairs, sandblasting, and coatings.
• Observe machine operations, gauges, or thermometers, and adjust controls to maintain specified conditions.
• Set controls to regulate temperature and length of cycles, and start conveyors, pumps, agitators, and machines.
• Examine and inspect machines to detect malfunctions.
• Adjust, clean, and lubricate mechanical parts of machines, using hand tools and grease guns.
• Implement proper rigging and operation of the cleaning trailer, high pressure wash trailer, Wilden Diaphragm Pumps, and Gould Centrifugal Pump.
• Unload various products from railcar to clean using hoists or forklifts.
• Follow prescribed safety procedures and comply with federal laws regulating waste disposal methods.
• Repair or replace defective or worn parts such as bearings, pistons, and gears, using hand tools, torque wrenches, power tools, and welding equipment.
• Test units for operability before and after repairs.
• Remove locomotives, car mechanical units, or other components, using pneumatic hoists and jacks, pinch bars, hand tools, and cutting torches.
• Inspect components such as bearings, seals, gaskets, wheels, and coupler assemblies to determine if repairs are needed.
• Repair, fabricate, and install steel or wood fittings, using blueprints, shop sketches, and instruction manuals.
• Repair and maintain electrical and electronic controls for propulsion and braking systems.
• Disassemble units such as water pumps, control valves, and compressors so that repairs can be made.
• Measure diameters of axle wheel seats, using micrometers, and mark dimensions on axles so that wheels can be bored to specified dimensions.
• Align car sides for installation of car ends and crossties, using width gauges, turnbuckles, and wrenches.
• Test electrical systems of cars by operating systems and using testing equipment such as ammeters.

Work Environment / Conditions and Physical Demands:

• Able to stand for long periods of time with limited breaks.
• Must be able to repetitively lift up-to 75 pounds and team lift up-to 150 pounds.
• Work in extreme temperatures and elements for an extended period of time.
• Must be able to work in confined spaces.
• Working around heavy moving equipment
• Must be able to work at elevated heights.
• Climb, squat, bend, and twist to accomplish work tasks.
• Requires the use of a tight-fitting respirator; You must be appropriately clean-shaven per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, at all times.

Experience and Education:

• High School Diploma (or GED or High School Equivalence Certificate)
• 3 years verifiable work experience.
• Experience Removing, Cleaning, and Reassembling Valves (preferred).
• Experience Welding Preferred
• NDTs Certification Preferred

• Removing, Cleaning, and Reassembling Valves: 1 year (Preferred)
• Railcar Repair: 3 years (Preferred)

License/Certification:

• NDT Certification (Preferred)
