Role Overview We are seeking a highly skilled, hands‑on Machine Shop Supervisor to guide our production team and help build our high-performance custom lighting fixtures. Located in Reno, this position requires travel to our San Dimas location one to two times per month for 2‑3 days each trip for a period of approximately six months to provide hands‑on operational support, standardize shop floor processes, and assist with paint booth production. Responsibilities Coordinate and lead the manufacturing operations of customized LED components, light engines, and linear lighting fixtures. Ensure workforce follows established procedures across fabrication, welding, and paint operations. Own sequencing of sheet metal fabrication processes to align designs with shop capabilities and maximize throughput. Remove bottlenecks in day‑to‑day operations with viable solutions. Qualitatively monitor workforce productivity. Manage and maintain essential production consumables. Order shop consumables such as filters, towels, welding supplies, etc. to support daily operations in the machine shop and paint booth. Support inter‑site manufacturing efforts through active involvement at the San Dimas facility. Audit and document manufacturing processes within the Reno and San Dimas machine shops and painting booths to standardize operations. Provide direct, hands‑on support in operating the machine shop and painting booth at the San Dimas location. Ensure all facilities operations align with corporate quality, safety, and efficiency benchmarks. Act as a hands‑on working supervisor, directly stepping in to operate machinery, fabricate parts, weld components, and maintain production goals. Perform hands‑on surface preparation and operate paint booth equipment to maintain production schedules and cosmetic standards. Directly operate and troubleshoot machine shop and sheet metal equipment daily to support workflow and remove physical bottlenecks. Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, develop, coach, and lead staff. Progress and enhance the working environment through employee engagement, results, and accountability. Evaluate human capital and material resource requirements and provide recommendations. Serve as a positive role model for all department personnel. Maintain a strong floor presence and lead by example. Coordinate efforts with Production Leadership to establish priorities and sequences for manufacturing customized products. Meet or exceed planned production goals using schedules. Create reports and provide feedback on productivity and project status. Ensure product quality meets established standards and specifications. Evaluate in‑process and finished goods for conformity to standards. Monitor product standards and participate in quality control discussions. Report progress toward quality goals and suggest improvements. Collaborate with cross‑functional departments to identify project milestones and critical areas of concern. Create positive working relationships and involve others towards departmental and company goals. Communicate status of needed parts and anticipated future needs. Promote company goals, policies, processes, and documentation for all customized products. Ensure all personnel adhere to machine guarding, PPE usage, and safe chemical/material handling practices. Detect, correct, and report unsafe practices or violations. Monitor and adjust production schedules as required. Develop or revise standard operational practices. Observe and correct workers to ensure compliance with company standards. Qualifications Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in a machine shop or metal fabrication environment. Minimum two years of direct supervisory experience. Strong working knowledge of sheet metal fabrication equipment, sequencing, and design principles. Familiarity with welding operations and surface/paint preparation standards. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred. Ability to learn extensive product lines, including basic understanding of high‑performance linear lighting, custom luminaire systems, light engines, low‑voltage installations, and power supplies. Experience with modern MRP/ERP systems in a manufacturing environment. Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel), FedEx, UPS, and USPS software systems. Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and ISO regulations a plus. Key Abilities Recruit, train, develop, evaluate, motivate, and coach direct reports. Manage, organize, and prioritize multiple projects and tasks effectively and timely. Read and interpret mechanical drawings and design documents. Demonstrate positive leadership and effective communication at all levels. Establish and nurture positive working relationships. Work with minimal supervision. Show high accuracy and attention to detail. Make sound, independent decisions and ensure compliance with policies. Safely operate and train team members on machine shop tools, welding apparatus, paint booths, power tools, and measuring instruments. Mobility to work in a standard warehouse setting and operate a motor vehicle. Positions require bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and climbing. Travel and Location Requirements Routine travel required: 2 times per month, 2‑3 days per trip to the San Dimas facility for oversight, documentation, and production assistance.
