Funeral Director

Job Responsibilities Receives or initiates calls to deceased next of kin, obtains or confirms deceased and family contact information, discusses needs and schedules arrangement appointments, and sends confirmation emails. May perform removals or transfers adhering to company standards and processes, and cares for deceased respectfully. Updates removal status in proprietary software. Greets next of kin and escorts to the meeting space. Initiates and facilitates the Arrangements Conference, assessing needs and summarizing desired outcomes. Discusses available life insurance and benefits, such as Veteran programs. Promotes funeral, cemetery, and crematory services and merchandise (catering, flowers, music, Ever Lasting Memory products). Transitions the Arrangement Conference to the Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor for cemetery property and merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion. May perform FSA/FSC responsibilities in their absence. Reviews and authorizes merchandise and service contract revisions. Confirms authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Presides as Master of Ceremonies at visitation, funeral, or graveside services in a professional and caring manner. Attends all graveside services included in the purchase agreement, verifies proper burial and removal of personal belongings. Visually inspects deceased, adjusts casket dressing, attire, or makeup as needed. Inspects services arrangements against contractual agreements and next‑of‑kin expectations, taking corrective action when appropriate. Interacts with families and guests, obtaining leads for pre-need services. Plans events, including resource planning and ordering of music, flowers, or catering. Produces MeM products such as scanning photos, creating electronic presentations, writing obituaries, and creating online memorials. Prepares event rooms and cleans up after events, ensuring proper storage and repair of items. Performs attendant duties (parking lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, courier) as needed. Attend community or charity events to represent and promote the location. Works under general guidance, learning to apply licensure to a business environment. Exhibits accountability, ensuring compliance with regulations. Takes initiative to discuss assignments, priorities, and deadlines, and seeks guidance when needed. Notifies manager when workload is light and volunteers for additional work. Adapts to new work structures, processes, requirements, or cultures. Assumes additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. Minimum Requirements Graduated from an accredited school or college of mortuary science. Current Funeral Director license within the practicing state. Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required to operate company owned vehicles. Industry experience is preferred. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Cognitive ability: reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, apply learning to new situations. Process and results oriented, motivated to remove obstacles and explore alternatives. Positive attitude, self‑motivation, and desire to advance industry knowledge. Ability to build professional and trusting business relationships. Professional written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking skills, influencing and gaining consensus. Proficiency with database and automated processes. Proficient MS Office skills. Work Conditions Environment: work indoors and outdoors during all seasons and weather. Attire: professional business attire required in contact with families. Postures: frequent continuous sitting or standing for up to 6 hours per day; frequent stair climbing. Physical demands: manual dexterity required, paperwork, calculator, computer, phone usage; push or pull up to 150 pounds on flat or inclined flooring/ramps. Hours & Pay Flexibility of availability may be necessary; services may occur outside of normal business hours, including nights and weekends. Pay ranges from $21.00/hr to $25.00/hr based on experience.
