Paramedic PRN

Morgan County Government

Paramedic for Morgan County EMS, responsible for responding to alarms for the medical treatment and transportation of injured or sick emergency victims. This is a part-time position.

DUTIES:

Responds to various alarms, including fires, auto accidents, medical calls, and rescues, riding in and/or driving appropriate vehicle to emergency or fire scene and carrying/setting up various equipment as necessary.

Assists in extricating victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques.

Provides medical treatment at emergency scenes, taking and recording vital signs and assessing nature and extent of illness/injury to prioritize medical procedures and need for additional assistance.

Monitors patients while en route to medical facilities and administers advanced life saving emergency medical procedures, such as defibrillation, I-V solutions, cardiac monitor, corrective drug therapy, cardiac pacing, Cricothyrotomy, sedation, chemical restraints, pain control, rapid- sequence intubation, and endotracheal intubation. May assist with patient care in emergency room at hospital.

Maintains inventory and checks expiration dates on drugs and other controlled substances, replenishing supplies as needed.

Offers comfort to distraught individuals at emergency scenes as appropriate, such as victims, relatives and/or spouses.

Maintains constant communication with other emergency personnel involved in emergency situations to provide and/or receive pertinent information.

Completes and submits various reports as required, including run sheets, inspection reports, and injury and bloodborne pathogens exposure reports.

Monitors equipment and vehicles to ensure proper working order and readiness for service. Replenishes supplies as needed.

Ensures vehicles are in good working conditions, properly maintained and stocked, and equipment is in good working condition. Cleans and maintains station house and living quarters.

Occasionally provides emergency assistance at community events, public service functions, expositions, and other public events as requested.

Occasionally provides testimony in legal proceedings/court.

Attends prescribed in-service or other training programs for certification/recertification as required, and may provide training to personnel and the public.

Serves on call and responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

High school diploma or GED with minimum of one year field experience as Basic EMT required.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of or ability to obtain Paramedic certification and other training programs/certifications within established Departmental deadlines including ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, AHA CPR for Healthcare Provider certification, NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800, and Biohazard training. EVOC/EVDT preferred.

Ability to meet all County hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and a written exam.

Thorough knowledge of and ability to effectively administer various emergency medical procedures, such as defibrillation, I-V solutions, cardiac monitor, corrective drug therapy, cardiac pacing, Cricothyrotomy, sedation, chemical restraints, pain control, rapid sequence, intubation, and endotracheal intubation.

Working knowledge of Department bloodborne pathogen exposure reporting procedures and ability to utilize universal health precautions to prevent oneself against infection.

Working knowledge of radio frequencies, procedures and limitations, and ability to speak clearly and distinctly, hear and be heard and understood in person, by radio, and by telephone.

Working knowledge of ePCR preferred.

Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare written reports within established Departmental deadlines.

Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of customary practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Department and ability to take authoritative action as situations demand.

Considerable knowledge of community geography, street names, locations and landmarks.

Ability to respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergency situations, perform necessary duties and take appropriate actions, despite stress of personal injuries or life and death situations.

Ability to maintain proficiency in large volume of protocols including drug dosages.

Ability to perform essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Ability to properly operate and maintain all assigned vehicles, equipment and uniforms.

Ability to properly operate standard office and medical equipment, such as computer, radio, heart monitor, defibrillator, suction unit, IV equipment, splints, cervical collar, spinal board, and pulse oximeter.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, hospitals, nursing homes, fire and other emergency personnel, law enforcement agencies, aeromedical transport, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.

Ability to comply with all Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/distraught persons.

Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people or things.

Ability to observe, analyze and evaluate data, make determinations, and take action based on data analysis.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment, often under time pressure and amidst frequent distractions and interruptions, and on several tasks at the same time.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and locations and read/interpret detailed charts, diagrams and maps.

Ability to perform arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.

Ability to testify in legal proceedings/court as requested.

Ability to work extended or irregular hours, evenings and/or weekends as scheduled and occasionally travel out of town for training and/or patient transfers, but not overnight.

Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.

Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record, and ability to be insurable to drive assigned vehicles under the County’s insurance policy.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent performs duties according to established Departmental operating procedures, making independent decisions and taking authoritative action in response to situational demands. Incumbent works according to a formal schedule with priorities primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public. Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual matters, such as policy interpretations. Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through legally defined procedures and supervisory review. Undetected errors could result in damage to endangerment to self/others and/or loss of life.

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Incumbent maintains frequent communication with co-workers, other County departments, hospitals, nursing homes, fire and other emergency personnel, law enforcement agencies, aeromedical transport, and the public for purposes of exchanging information, maintaining cooperative work relationships, and rendering service.

Incumbent reports directly to Supervisor.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs majority of duties in an ambulance and at emergency scenes, involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, driving, keyboarding, pushing/pulling objects, climbing stairs, lifting/carrying persons or heavy equipment, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Incumbent is occasionally exposed to hazardous conditions normally associated with emergency scenes, including smoke, toxic chemicals, noxious gases/fumes, extreme heat, dangerous heights, varying weather conditions, violent/distraught individuals and communicable diseases. Universal health/safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid contamination, infection and/or injury to self or others and protective equipment/gear must be worn according to Department policy.

Incumbent works extended or irregular hours, evenings and/or weekends as scheduled and occasionally travels out of town for training and/or patient transfers, but not overnight. Incumbent regularly responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
